Non-mid-scooped small cabs?

Sign in to disble this ad
What 1x10 or 1x12 enclosures are not mid-scooped?

I recently bought an Epifani UL2-110 and it sounds very mid-scooped (almost too mid-scooped).

Schroeders? You won't get any real low end, but that might work well depending on the sitation and what you're looking for.

Schroeders will slap you in the face and scream "I'm here". Very mid-oriented cabs. Sound awesome in the gig, a bit nasal by themselves.

Bergantinos are not scooped either, more like flat and a "velvet-like" studio quality...

I like the lows and highs of the UL2 but the mids are way too polite for my taste even when I boost 250-300Hz.

Want mids? Build a TB110. No real lows (but what single 10 has them?), but very prominent mids and you can build one for about $125!

I haven't tried many cabinets of this type but I own a pair of EA CxL112 cabinets. I feel that there are more mids than I need without sacrificing any lows. Not sure how flat the frequency response is but they're quite satisfying even with one soloed.

BFM Jacks -- you can check the output charts on Bill's website.

For commercially available cabs, check out some of KJung's reviews and Tom Bowlus' shootouts.

I just picked up a TC Electronic RS112, its 35lbs and pretty small, 12" with a coaxial tweeter and rear port. 200 Watts, and its not mid-scooped. I love mine, and really want a second.

Its got a pretty vintage sound, nice and round.

Jack 12's got the mids of a 2x12 for sure. I've got two for my practice PA, works pretty well for that, sounds good for bass too.

The TL designs with Neo drivers are great all around cabs, with strong mids, and only slightly light on lows (on stage). I enjoy my tiny TL806 1x12 whenever possible. It covers most of what I need (R&B, Blues, Rock). For larger venues I use either the TL 806 2x12, or TL606 1x15... All small and light, and sound good.

Schroeders have a ton of mids, to a fault sometimes, and then BFM Jacks are very mid heavy as well in a good way IMO. I have a Jack 12 and It's has much louder mids than some of my other cabs which may not sound as great solo but in a mix those mids are really heard.

Tom Bowlus has sung the praises of the GK NEO 112 more than once in various threads here for the articulation (i.e., mids) as well as their overall sound.

Get anything with the 3012HO from Eminence. More mids than you'll know what to do with. Good enough low end with the right EQ adjustments.

That's a great, great cab, and just stellar for the money. While I think that the mids are fairly well balanced, I will say that the big low end can make the mids feel just a tad bit scooped (but not like an Epi UL-110). The EA Wizzy 10 or 12 (both regular and M-line flavors) was another great suggestion from a few posts up. These cabs have great midrange warmth and texture, but do not extend up into the shimmery/shiney/sparkly top end. The M-line Wizzy (12) has the biggest/deepest low end extension of this bunch.

Bergantino HT112 (the older model) has great midrange focus and presence, but they are somewhat heavy for their size. The Berg AE112's are very nice, too. Not quite as strong/focused in the mids as the HT112's, but fairly well balanced from top to bottom. The HT112ER's have such a big low end that the mids can sound a bit scooped. The Mesa/Boogie PH112 is very present in the midrange, but not quite as refined/clean as the Bergs.

Man, there are lots of good options. It all comes down to personal preferences.

Edit: I can't believe I forgot to mention a fEarful 12/6!
