noob needs some input

im not happy with my current setup so im looking to improve on what i own or look into something else. Ive been playin bass for a year now through two different amp setups.

i have a Line6 lowdown 150 that sounds great and has some nice features, but isnt loud enough to play along with the few kids i play along with.

i also have a hartke vx410 with a hartke 2500 head, this has the volume i need, but i feel the tone is rather mundane no matter what kind of EQ'ing i do.

Im trading in my two basses and buyin whatever one feels/sounds how i like from GC in the next few weeks. So this may help me find the sound im lookin for. I was thinking about trading in all my gear and coming out with a bass and possibly a 2x12 and a GK head.

or maybe just a diff head for the 4x10 and some pedals....

Yes... trading both your rigs for one that’s light/portable and would cover both practice and jams wouldn’t be a bad idea.

GK is one of a few great choices.

Don't trade in your stuff to GC, they will rip you off. Try selling your stuff on craigslist or eBay and you will get much more money for it.

As for basses, you should check out a Fender P and J, these are basses that have been around forever and many find these suitable. P basses have a more low mid sound, while Jazz basses have more of a growl and more high end clarity. Other companies I like are Ernie Ball and Rickenbacker; Rickenbackers have a cool rock tone, and are good high gain basses, but can really do almost anything.(Think Rush and Yes)

As for amps, you have only tried solid state amplifiers so far, you should try a hybrid amplifier, or a tube amplifier. Tube amplifiers sound warm and thick, but let your ears tell you what's right.

Hope this helps you a bit. Goodluck!

i dont think its such a bad idea to trade in at GC, they may give you a little less for your stuff but they also give you 15% off any new purchase if your trade is valued at $200 or more. My buddy just traded a marshall 4x10 with a marshall tube amp and they gave him a brand new fender strat at an almost even trade. So if the deals good im going to go for it. But i have heard some horror stories.

As for a new bass, i played a Ibanez srt 800dx last week that kinda blew my mind $900 wasnt to expensive, it has active EMG's great feal to it. But im not sold, goin on a mega bass test drive session next week

Ill be trading a esp 5 string and an ibanez 5 string and one of my amps for the new guitar, and ill keep one amp and possibly put it on CL or EBAY to help fund my new rig

thanks for the feed back
