Noobish Problem

Sign in to disble this ad
So I bought an Ampeg 410HLF off of Craigslist. I went and tried the amp out at the sellers place and it sounded excellent and just what I was looking for.

I went and bought it and hooked it up to my Ashdown MAG300 untill I get a new head.

My problem is that it sounds really muddy and fartish when I start turning the volume up. It has an analog meter, but it's not even close to the redline.

I'm not totally sure what's up with it

Does lowering your amps bass knob help?

Kinda but not really....if i turn off my back pickup and turn my tone down all the way down on my guitar then it goes away, but then it sounds too smooth and mellow...

glad you don't have that problem now but... "underpowering" would not be the cause of the sound you described...

The MAG series are a pretty muddy/boomy head in general in my experience and so is the HLF. That sound is just what happens when you mix the two together. Congrats on the 4 Pro, you'll get a much better tone out of that.

I never really knew that about my MAG. It has always sounded smooth on my MAG 410T. Idk it don't really matter.

The 4Pro is awsome and SHE BANG Got it in my bedreem (10'x10') and everthing keeps falling off the walls for some odd reason hahaha

I did buy it second hand and the mono/stereo button fell out and i gotta use a pen ta work it. Also, when i move the frequency knob it will sometimes make a REALLY loud pop.

Thanks for helping figure out my problem

Companies that make both amps and cabs tend to voice their amps using their cabs, so it's not unusual at all for amps and cabs from different sources to not get along well. Power has little to nothing to do with it.

I never thought about that Thanks for the help everybody!

I am totally watt hungry and that's one of the reasons why i switched to the SVT-4PRO...but the sound quality of the MAG on the 410T is pretty sweet
