Not all recone kits created equal. JBL?

Sign in to disble this ad
I want to pick up a blown K130 from a guy I used to work with. He's been reconing speakers for over a decade and, in fact, was a McIntosh tech. He and I would both prefer to give his business the money rather than me buy it blown and take it somewhere else. Now I am lucky to know that not all recone kits are created equal, as I have witnessed this myself - same two speakers, but with different brand (same model) recone kits, making one sound completely different (lacking). Is there a brand of kit I should look out for? What is best/most accurate compared to the original cone? I should also mention that he would be reconing it with a K140 kit, giving it more power. Anyone see a problem with this tonally?

Thanks guys.

The k140 kit would be more suited to bass than the k130. I believe the only kit now is the E series but the e140 cone sounds the same and it has better power handling. It should also work in your k130 basket.

IMO, here's the best one since it's OEM JBL:
JBL C8RE140 RECONE KIT - BRAND NEW - | eBay

generally, you can't buy them seperately ( since authorized JBL reconers can't sell them).

i've also heard great things about orange county speaker's aftermarket JBL kits (they're authorized JBL). they have both the OEM kit (that has to be reconed by them), and an aftermarket kit. from what i've heard, their aftermarket kit is made by the same manufacturer that makes the kits for JBL.

Thanks guys. That info solves my problems and after looking at OC Speakers website, I think I will go as close to original if I have the option.

From OC Speakers' Site:
15" JBL E130, K130 Aftermarket Cloth Edge Cone
15" JBL D140, K140, E140 Aftermarket

Couple questions though. Who actually makes the aftermarket/oem kits that jbl uses? And is the "cloth edge cone" the same as the oniginal k130 cone?

From what I am gathering, the E/K-130 is the same cone and either E/K-140 will fit my basket. Sound correct?

Again, thanks.

i have no idea who makes the aftermarket kits or the OEM ones. OC speaker might be able to help you with that.

IIRC, the original K cone kits used a Kapton voicecoil former and the E kit uses an aluminum/Nomex former. both of them have treated cloth surrounds.
and D, K, & E 130 and 140 baskets are all interchangeable. in other words, a recone kit for a 130 will fit a 140, and you can use a D, K or E kit for either one.
