not much info / opinions on MB cabs?

Sign in to disble this ad
THeres lots of threads on the MarBass amps, but I dont see much on the cabs.

Looking for insight / reviews on the 410 models. The front shelf ported and rear ported and how they compare to other 410's. Namely, Genz Benz, GK, Swr and other NEO cabs spefically.

thanks!

Markbass makes good stuff, but I do not like most of their cabs as well as comparable models from Mesa or Genz.

I am a big fan of the NY121 cabinet. Solid sounding cab. Pretty much the only one I like - for the money it's a solid cab, and super light.

I've owned, played thru and tested in the shop most of their models, old and new.
The early stuff (all black, probably unavailable outside Italy) was BAD: had the STD104 and the Club121Z... both sold after a while to get an SWR Triad (heavy but worth the trouble).
Their "mid" series wasn't nothing to write books on... light and nice looking but IMHO the weight thing took over the sound. Too small, bad tweeters...
Their latest series seems muuuch better. I tried the 4x8" and the bigger 2x10" and both sounded good. A different tweeter I guess 'cause the highs were finally decent (after years of honky horns).
I always liked their heads, though. Had the first Littlemark for years and was very good. The DI wasn't of the same quality but the little thing had a lot of clean headroom and was small and easy to carry even if it wasn't ultra-light (8kg).
You should try but I'd expect the front ported series to sound bigger and better.

I briefly owned the 115 and when comparing it to my Mesa 115 it was dramatically bad sounding. Very boxy and muddy with no clarity. The mesa 115 was in a completely different league. The salesman at my local dealer is of the opinion that the markbass 410 is one of the worst sounding 410 cabs ever for the most amount of money. I have not heard it myself but he is known to have good ears.

I like my LMIII a lot but would avoid their cabs at this point.

I went from an Eden 410XLT to a traveller 102P and double ported STD102HF and have never regretted it. I recently added another Traveller 102p to use as a pair and have been extremely happy with the punchy sound with plenty of bottom end.

I don't quite understand the harsh tweeter thing. I find them subtle to the point of hardly being noticeable. I never suffer any hiss either from the piezo tweeters that others have complained about. My band love the sound of my MB gear.

Sometimes the cabs don't sound great soloed though. At a local rehearsal room I A/B'd one of my 102p's against a PV TNT combo and by itself it sounded as harsh and cheap. In the mix however it sounded full and warm.

+1. I've never been a fan of tweeters in bass cabs, and would normally just attenuate them down to inaudibility. The Markbass tweeters (current ones anyway) are very subtle and transparent, to the point that I think someone seeking a super hi-fi slap sound might find them inadequate.

Don't know about their 410s as I haven't auditioned them. But I am GASing big time for a NY151 to pair with my CMD 121P... the single 15 sounds gorgeous with my combo, and really adds some girth and warmth (especially to notes on the B string).
