Smile Now Know Why People Love the Mesa Boogie Walkabout!

Sign in to disble this ad
So during my visit to GC today, I tried some Mesa stuff. First, I tried an M6 into a Neo 410. Very bright sounding and had a hard time rolling off the trebleness. Though when I tried the M9 into a Bergantino 212, that sounded full, deep, and was very versatile. After all of that, I tried the walkabout combo and man was I blown away! A combo at 300 watts, 112 speaker, and port on bottom apparently. Boy did this thing sound fat, deep, articulate, and EXTREMELY versatile!! Now I'm deciding wether 300 watts will be enough for me, or if 900 is more like it. Again, I didn't like the M6 (600 watts).

Other thing is I could get the M9 with a Bergantino 410, and if I choose to go to a music school or bring an amp, I could get the walkabout combo then, which means more mesa for me!

Maybe the M6 did not match up with the cab you had it through. I never heard one sound of to much treble that it could not be dialed out. Try it through a mesa cab.

I played the M6 through a 410 neo mesa cab.

Could be possible that someone had the horn dialed all the way up on the back of the cab .

Could be he just didn't like the voicing of that amp, it's much more modern sounding than a Walkabout. Different strokes.

Love both the carbines and Walkabout, but the latter has some magic dust in it that can't be found anywhere else IMHO. If you play loud, though, you'll need a much bigger cab than the Scout 12. If you want a combo, get the 4 Ohm 15 or the 8 Ohm 12 (special order). The 4 Ohm 12 cannot take the full 300 watts (virtually no stock, production single 12 will) and you'll want another 12 under it. IME the Avatar TB153, in 4 Ohms, is an outstanding match for the Walkabout.

Mesa doesn't make a 4x10 neo.

The horns in the 4x10's are neo. Not the speakers.

I like a lot of Mesa amps, but have always been unimpressed with Mesa cabs

If you liked the Walkabout "tube-like" tone, it would be worth checking out the Genz Benz Streamliner amp. Same tonal ballpark, lighter, "less" EQ (though still extremely flexible and usable), but 900 watts.

streamliner vs M9. What's ur opinion. Same wattage, more eq control on the mesa.

I did a thread on this exact comparison:

Genz Benz Streamliner 900/Genz Benz GBE 1200/Mesa M9 Carbine taste test

I really like them both and am glad to have them. Streamliner has a "depth" and give to its tone that the Mesa can't quite match and can do overdrive (the M9 is really a clean machine), but the Mesa has PLENTY of bottom, a compressor (which I actually like) and an almost infinitely versatile EQ between the knobs, graphic, and voice settings. That said, the Streamliner EQ section is IMO and IME very well thought-out and gives the amp a surprisingly amount of flexibility.
