Bought a Hartke 410xl speaker cab today loooked to be in great shape paid the guy 150.00 cash. I borught it home hooked it up to my GK 400rb and....it has a very annoying buzz in the lower end. Anything in the upper register or at very low volume is fine but if I play a solid deep note or turn my amp up even a little. I get a horrible speaker rattle. It sound like it may be coming mostly from the lower left speaker but its hard to tell.
At first I thought the speaker was blown and I was ready to kill the guy who sold it to me. Then I read that the dust covers have a tendency to come lose and have adhesive failure. I'm still pissed and I hope I can fix this myself and not have to shell out cash for a new set of speakers.
The guy who sold it to me now wont answer his phone. He assured me that it was perfect and sounded awsome. Little does he know that I have ways of finding him. First I took the plate number of his car, second I have his e-mail and IP address. Third I have his cell number. I'm going to call him again tomorrow and if he blows me off again I'm going to find him and have a talk with him.

it could be as simple as a loose screw. go around all the speakers and tighten the screws. don't overtighten but they should all be snug. also, check the screws on the grill and everywhere else.

and this is very important: take it outside and see if it does it. there are many times i've heard a rattle and thought it was coming from my cab, only to find out it was something else in the room entirely.

the fact that it only rattles on certain notes makes me think there's nothing at all wrong with your cab's speakers. it sounds to me more like what are called "sympathetic vibrations" (google it). so calm down and get to tightening screws.

Check the dustcaps and also where the aluminum cones meet the cloth surround. Little elbow grease may fix it right up, it is a $150 410 after all. Take the front grill off and watch all the speakers as you play through it. If one is flopping back and forth a lot more than the others, that's a sign of a blown speaker.

OK took off the front grill and the two of the speakers look to be messed up. The durst covers are in great shape but on the two in question the speaker surround looks like it pulled away from the mountng ring. Not a very big area look slike the black paint wore away and the ring got a little surface rust on it alowing the glue to wear out and the surroung is no longer attatched.
Is there any way to fix this?

I once repaired torn surrounds on a speaker in our pa bass bins by using silicone on them and 15 years later they are still going strong. If the problem is from the surronds coming loose from the metal under the gasket i would use epoxy to glue it back to the metal part of the speaker.
