first post and its got length and rant
So im a guitar player, obsessed with gear, spend lots of money and the whole bit. Im deep into the addiction im sure alot of u are familiar
Im a Black Keys meets ZZ TOP with a bit of clean honky tonk mixed in, and have been for 18yrs type of player. When it comes to bass, Im looking for that old raw walkin blues tone
so anyways...
recently, I acquired a Fender p-bass 50's reissue, maple fretboard and usa hardware, etc whatever... so I figured it would be good to have around the house, turns out its great to have around the house.
so now Ill need a rig thatll work for at home and for small (but loud) gigs (700 buck range) and i have expensive taste and a nose for deals, time to hit the forums and hard!
These are a few observations Ive made while trying to crack the code that is the bass rig.
1- The world of bass amps is a like a new language compared to guitars.. solid state??..? are you kidding me(?), ive been taught to hate solid state amps, but im over it and accept it fully
2- Ampeg Ampeg Ampeg!! Obviously!! but I dont have the scratch for the 3000 rig nor need the power. And i dont want the mini stack
3- MarkBass gets mentioned an awful lot and rarely anything negative, tho I hate the yellow but arent too concerned, it seems like an obvious choice and almost any model 2 boot! A MarkBas sa-450 is in my local clsfds for 6 hundred and so Ive been doing some research, from what i could gather, its actually a decent deal with a bit of old fashioned negotition
4- Cab design seems to have a much more indepth focus on tuning, they seem more hit or miss when pairing with heads. its over my head, i know the swappin (guitar) cabs game and its never cheap. Horns and tweeters with dials, huh? Thats cool, im cool
5- folks see weight as a bigger concern than I had thought, I realize nobody wants to cart around a 70lbs head nor a 130lbs 8x10.. but people seem to be pushing for ultra light weight, whats the difference between 5lbs or 15lbs for a head- we're talking bass, man!. Dont roast me for this, its not that important.. but focus on the tone, not the weight, again we're talking bass!
6- Peavey is acceptable(

), another one thatll take a bit getting used to.

(tho them classic 400's in tweed look ridiculous ((once the peavey badge is removed!))).
8- bass gear isnt as avlble on the used market like guitar stuff. currently the only items worth mentioning around my parts is that markbass head for 650 and a mesa 4x10 cab for 500. Tho I bet thatll make a deadly(heavy) rig
9- knobs knobs and more knobs, some them smaller ss heads look wicked hi fi, but dont have a clue what half of it is or what i'd want to be looking for. The websites dont help much either.
10- it must be good feeling knowing that a 500+ watt amp is an almost an reasonable purchase, who else you know can say that? And the all tube ones, with all there 75 tubes are glowin in harmony, just killer!
i just saying hello
can someone recommend a small head around 250watts. One that looks like it was designed as a star trek prop in the 80's and obviously when matched to a small yet tuff lookin cab has tone for days. Ive seen a few rigs like that and i just love em.
i know my spelling sucks
have a good day and thanks for having me aboard
