[quote=SGD Lutherie;The Hartke 4X10 sounds great!
The XL has a brighter crunchier tone, and still has a huge low end. And it's loud. The Mesa is smoother/darker and more vintage sounding. The new band is a grunge band, so I wanted a grindier tone, and the XL can do that well. But it's very versatile.

I have played the XLs in the past with a GK-800RB and always liked them.]

Thanks for your thoughts on this cab, David!

My local mom & pop has a new 210XL marked down after several years (!) on the floor. Seriously considering picking it up and pairing it with a Carvin BX250.

Wow... do I get big red letters too? Here's mine, and I have a question about it to follow:

Question: Is there any conventional wisdom concerning putting a mid-driver where the tweeter horn is on this VX-215? The tweeter is blown, and there lies its corpse in black under the grille. But I wonder about a replacement, maybe something of better quality than what was there (these always seem to blow)? What about an 18 Sound or similar, with a modded or rebuilt crossover?

Thoughts?

That's actually not a terrible idea IMO. I know a lot of TBers would be all "What?!?! That cab isn't tuned for a mid range driver! fEARful fEARful fEARful yadda yadda blah." But I think that as long as you can get the crossover to work properly it would be a pretty cool cab. You'd still get all the 215 thunder but with a little extra upper mid while avoiding those obnoxious snappy highs

I say go for it. GO! GO NOW!

I concur! Of course we'll need photos and a play by play description of the upgrade!

I will commence as soon as I get a driver, and will take photos. I may be having to do a little homework on crossovers, as I think the one in there now will probably not do- it'll need to be a lower x-over point...

Very, very true! Probably plenty of crossover info in the fEARful threads and scattered throughout the Amps forum on TalkBass.

Just a friendly heads up. They get a little hostile in the fEARful threads, don't get discouraged if you get a less than friendly initial response, someone who's not a snob will eventually come along haha

You want to find out what the lower crossover point is for your midrange driver. Since you are adding a midrange to 2 15's, I wouldn't worry about them. It's not like you are setting up a three way system. So you can tack on a midrange driver without removing that band from the 15s. The 15s are probably lacking in that type of midrange anyway.

It's not the text book way of doing it, but I think you will find it works fine. I've done it with cabs that were lacking in mids, like folded horn enclosures.

So just find a x-over frequency where the mid driver sounds good with the 15s.
