Okay, I think that I've almost got it...

I have a Precision, I put flats on it, now I need an Ampeg and I think that should be it.

Oh, and a tort guard... I've got to get the tort guard or the rest is pointless.

I'm sort of kidding, but I do have to say that I really like the sound of a P (with flats) through an Ampeg.

I'm guessing that I'm not alone.

Tort guard, yes. The rest is fluff.

I have owned my '63 Precision since January '68. It had no strings on it when I got it. At the time I was using Rotosounds but long scale sets were unavailable in Liverpool. I took a trip to Manchester where I found a set. I stayed with them until the late Seventies when fret wear became a problem. I switched to Brite Flats, I forget who makes them, and the fret wear was much reduced. A couple of years back I returned the bass to stock. Re-installing the original package and removing my phantom powered active electronics and EMG pickup. I installed flats and absolutely hated the results. All the instrument's life and personality vanished and what was left was a dull muddy thump. Not even my B15 could do anything with it.

Possibly an SVT could bring something back but nothing that I want.

The bottom line of the situation is that your tone goals are most likely completely different to mine. We are all different and that's the best! Enjoy your equipment - I hope it brings you joy for many, many years.

Edit: The bass still has the flats installed as I seldom even use it. A new set of Brite Flats is waiting on the string shelf ready for when I get around to installing
them.

Edit2: I met my wife playing it on June 06 '68. We're coming up on our year 44. Gawd I feel old!

I made the original post with my tongue in cheek. I was joking about the amount of fans of Precisions, flats and tort guard users here.

But in honesty, I'd have never considered installing flats had it not been for TB. And I really do like them. So will I eventually snag a SVT and see what all the fuss is about for myself? Very likely. I'll make my own decision on whether it works for me or not.

I'm not really a fan of tort guards though. I put black guards on all of my Fenders (and my Music Man) to get that 1970's look that I grew up with.

Sheesh! What do you know? You're a DRUMMER for gawd's sake! Get back on your riser 'n' stop drooling!

Mine has a tort' guard 'cos that's what it came with. I think it suits the instrument purrfectly. I have to admit that apart from the P and my old Beatle bass, all my basses, five of 'em, sport black hardware.
