Old peavey 2x15. Weight unloaded. Wiring.

Hello I'm thinking of getting an old peavey 2x15 cab and loading it with neodymium drivers. I'm hoping this will drop the weight down enough that I can carry it around myself without much duress. Anybody have an approximation of how much this cab weighs unloaded?

Also for anyone who has one of these. Does it have 2 8ohm drivers wired in series? Or 2 4 ohms in parallel?

Mine, as seen in the following link, is 100lbs with grill and everything installed.

Peavey 2x15 Project - Complete

I can pretty easily move it around myself. You can also check out the wiring diagram I used. I know the stock speakers are not 4 ohms each.

Nice work! I like the switchable 4 and 8 ohms.

Yeah I have load up and down like 10 stairs by myself so weight is always on my mind. Those eminences weigh like 14 pounds so the cab probably weighs about 70.

Right now I use an ampeg svt410 that weighs 91 lbs and I don't want to go much heavier than that

Old Peavey project

Something like this? Early '80's Peavey 2-15?

This one got some EV Force 15's back in the mid eighties and I dragged it around for decades.

In 2006 I put some 3015 neos in it. Two drivers at 8ohms for a 4 ohm cab is how these were wired. Shaved 25 lb off the weight and improved the sound, but not enough to be satisfied with the results based on the money spent.

The 3015's went into a pair of TL 606's I built for a few bucks in the garage. Much better results and a more flexible rig with two cabs that fit in the Corolla over one 2-15 that didn't.

I put the EV's back in the Peavey and lugged it up the stairs one last time, sold it for $100. Glad to see it go.

I also, only paid $100 for mine with two Black Widow speakers. I keep it as a practice amp at our rehearsal room. If you will spend $15 at WalMart for some mattress foam and line the insides of that cabinet, it will sound pretty good.

Anybody know the wattage of the stock drivers? The 4 ohm square backs.

The stock drivers should not have been 4 ohms. The standard 215 cabinet came as an 4 ohm cabinet. They had to be 8 ohms each. They were about 80 watts RMS. The best one I've had was loaded with a pair of JBL E140's. (it was my doing) Also the EV Force 15's were nice, but lacking on the low end. (another one that I changed around) The old Peavey 215 cabinet is a work horse. If you can find the 215D get it. It is about 3" shorter, but 3" deeper. It has a great low end.

Same as Bassdopp ... i have 2 of those peavey 215 deep cabs. Came with 2 black widow 8 ohm speakers which I believe were rated at 250 RMS with the cool aluminum dust caps. The cabs are built like a tank. T-nuts with bolts instead of wood screws, 2 separated compartments ported on the sides. The black widows sound really good but also tried out the cab with JBL E140's and with one speaker and an ampeg amp I thought the concrete was gonna give way. The cabs are heavy by themselves.

I bought them new and never gigged them. I'm looking to sell them cheap with or without drivers ...

The one I'm looking has the rectanglular port not the triangular port. Is there much of a difference? Are any of these the "deep" cab

I have the one with the rectangular shelf port between the speakers. Empty it's about 80 pounds, give or take. With Eminence CB158s in it it was ~110 ish? Was too heavy for anything but leaving it at the rehearsal space, so I have since broken the speakers out and it sits empty and unloved in my garage.

Back in the early 80' I had 2 of those with a MarkIV head. The triangular port seemed to work. Heavy as hell but man, monster volume.
I wonder if TSP's were even considered when they built some of those old cabs? Or did they go with the old "bigger the box, bigger the boom" theory?

The 215 cabinet has been around for a long time. I've had it with the rectangular port in the middle and along the side. The cabinet has seen many designs throughout the years. Still the same cabinet as far as the output is concerned. The Black Widows are great work horses, too. They are 350 watts RMS. 40Hz-2KHz. You can find them with or without the aluminum dust caps. That is what I have at the bottom of my stack. The top cab is loaded with the 12" Scorpions. (the head is to die for) Fender 400PS
You are not going to get the cabinet to a favorable weight if you are looking for light weight. 80-90 lbs. is about where you will end up.

You know I have a 2X15 D with the triangular ports and I find it is lacking on the lows. To me it seems to have a lot more low mids.

I reloaded my 215 BW cab with Eminence Deltalite II 2515s.
Put in a metal cup with (2) Neutrik NL-4 and (2) 1/4" jacks in parallel.

Much lighter and tons of bottom end.

Which version of the cab do you have? Is it the D with the triangular ports or the rectangular ports (middle or side)?
