Old Peavey TNT 115 BW blown?

Sign in to disble this ad
I need some help diagnosing a problem that's cropped up recently with my trusty old Peavey TNT 115 BW. When I turn the volume up to 4 or over (w/the pre-gain between 3 and 5) and play lower notes, the speaker is doing some serious rattling. I know next to nothing about speakers, but I did some searching online for common problems w/these Black Widows and ran across this: http://music-electronics-forum.com/t7948/#post63323

So I took the speaker out, looked it over, and it appears to be in amazingly good shape. No holes, tears, or other apparent problems w/the cone. No wires or screws appear to be loose. Nothing rattled or seemed to be loose when I moved the speaker. The foam around the outside of the spider is in really good condition. I took the magnet off and everything looked perfectly clean underneath. It didn't seem to be loose or off-center either. I'm stumped.

Any thoughts or input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks…

Check the hardware on your cabinet.. I can't tell you the number if times I've bought speakers when I should have bought a screwdriver.

Remove magnet again, double over a piece of masking tape and wipe around the voice coil slot. There maybe some dust or grit in there causing the problem.

look at your ribbon to ensure there are zero blemishes too..you can visibly see a failing coil (most times)

Thanks guys... the coil appears to be fine. It looks clean too, but I'll try the tape cleaning trick.

Play with the grill cover off... does it rattle still?

I had the same amp for years and had this happen to me... it was the crappy velcro not doing its job.

Make sure that the port isn't chuffing. I think PV didn't have these lower pitches we use now in mind when they built them...I had to modify mine (same cab) for that reason...
