Old Peavy Mk 3 Series head

Sign in to disble this ad
So I got this head from a hippy at an open mic. It looks pretty vintage, he said it used transistors instead of tubes, anyone know if there's any truth in that statement?

I've been playing with it and its pretty out of control tone wise the EQ seems very sensitive.

I've been playing with the idea of selling it because I'm looking into tube amps but if I can't sell it for much I may as well keep it. Would someone who's into older equipment be into this kind of thing or should I just take it to a pawn shop?

I would do a search, everybody and their brother has one of those somewhere in the house. Look up Peavey Mark III.

You don't sound like a bassist. Are you?

Well, I have one of these and there are no tubes, so, um, transistors it is.

I wouldn't expect to get much for it if you sell it. $100 if you're lucky. Keep it. Use it as a sub for your PA.

Peavey voiced their early heads differently than most other amps. My suggestion: set the eq bass side high and treble side just below halfway. Then make a straight line between them with the other faders. This will give you close to what flat is for other bass amps, then tweek to personal preference.

The Peavey Mark III head is solid, I owned one in the early years of my development. It is a "solid-state" bass head. It has two channels and if you plug it in in the middle, you get both. It should be 210 watts at 4 ohms. I believe it will go down to 2 ohms and put out 300 watts (double check that info on the back). If you go to a Pawn Shop, they will probably give you $50.00-75.00 if your extremely lucky. I would keep it if it works fine, you can't replace the amp for that. Or sell it to me, I wouldn't mind having one again just to keep at the house.

Well it looks like you are more or less trying to sell your head here in this thread which is against policy and your story is very strange about how some 'hippy' at an open mic just 'gave' you an amp. Just doesn't sound like the kind of story we usually hear around here that's all - thanks we like the unexpected! Keep 'em coming!
