One of these threads ... sorry (TC/Ampeg?)

Hi guys,

I´ve been reading pretty much all that I could find herein on TC Electronics RH450 combo (RS210) as well as Ampeg´s PF 350 mated with a AV210.

I cannot test these prior to purchase where I live so have to go with what I can read and see on youtube...

Anyways, I did not find a straight comparison of these two options but I did find this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T9Thkvn_7FE

If the sound of PF 350 with the AV210 is similar to what I am hearing on this vid I guess I´d be turning over to the TC´s offering, which I am thinking as the best option at this point anyways... Problems is it would cost me twice what the Ampeg´s would and I am not convinced that it offers twice the sound... so...

Reading stuff like this does not help either : FS/T: Ampeg Porta flex PF-350 (yeah, it is a sales ad but nevertheless as folks appear to quite like the PF 350 with the AV210 as long as there is only one cabinet).

The stack/combo will be firmly planted on my small living room so portability is not an issue. What is, is the fact that I cannot (neighbors behind the wall) play loud, and besides that I like to hear on even older age that I am now (42), so prefer to play pretty quiet anyways. The idea is that what I´ll lack in volume - which I do not need - I want to compensate on sound quality.

What say you? - Pros and cons for either or should I just go for the darn cute Ashdown 15 watt all tube CTM 15 on the making?

So... what would you do in my shoes?

Thanks,

J.

That is an all tube vintage Portaflex in the video, not the PF-350.

First off, any demo's you listen to online will only sound as good as the speakers you hear them through. If volume is not a big need, but good bass tone is the goal, I would look for (on the inexpensive side) an Ampeg B50R combo amp, which is discontinued, but avaialble on the used market. This is the smallest, least expensive way to acheive the classic "Ampeg sound". The current Ampeg BA112 is another good choice. On the other hand, a good choice for great tone is the Mesa Walkabout Scout 12, which is pricey, but unbelievably awesome sounding, as well as useful should you ever need more volume, as it's head can power larger cabinets.

That was not a good vid. Way too much distortion, and sounds like it was recorded far away with a camera mic. Having heard both the TC rig live and owning a B-15 from 1964, anyone who would choose the TC rig over the B-15 either needs way more volume than the B-15 can put out or needs to have their head examined.

IMO neither of those is a particularly good choice for a "living room rig." Beyond overkill.

I'd say get a Zoom B3 and a nice pair of headphones (or a small full range powered monitor if you must play through a speaker) and enjoy various amp simulations at your whim.
