Opinion on what to pair with My SWR Henry 8X8

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm not asking what the best combination of cabs is, as thats just an opinion... man...
I understand that there is no "right" answer, but as someone who is a daily reader here and someone who considers this the best source of bass related information, I'd like your opinions, or what you would do.

I have a SWR 750X and a SWR Henry 8X8. The 750X can handle 2.6 OHMS, and the Henry is 4Ohms. I can pair the 4 OHM Henry with an 8OHM cab which will put me at 2.6 OHMs.
I know it's not optimal to run the 750 at 2.6 for an extended period of time, and I fully inted to eventually use 2 8 Ohm cabs, but the wife would probably casturate me if I bought two cabs when I already have one.

I'm OCD and want to stay completely SWR with my rig.

I'm looking at
Goliath 8OHM 4x10 800 watts
Big Ben 8OHM 1x18 400 watts
Son of Birtha 8OHM 1x15 350 watts
Golight 8OHM 1x15 350 watts

With the Henry 8x8 pumping out 480 watts do any of the above make a more ideal match than the others?

If you were in my position, and wanted to stay with SWR what would you do?

Thanks in advance guys.

Hopefully you don't think this another one of those "here we go again threads."

-David

I wouldn't worry about it and just use the Henry alone. Or, I might get a 4Ω Golight 4x10 for when I'm to lazy to schlep the Henry. Seriously, why would you need more than just the Henry?

Guitarist#1 plays a JCM900 cranked on a full stack because of guitarist#2.
Guitarist#2 plays through a Mesa fullstack.

Neither buy into the notion that playing at lower volumes helps, so asking them to turn down to a reasonable level is pointless.

As far as a getting a 4ohm Goliath to carry around if I'm too tired/lazy to carry the Henry on a given night... The Goliath weighs 89 pounds compared to the Henry which weighs in at an even 100 pounds, so that wouldn't be worth it for a difference in 11 pounds. At least not for me given my size and build.

I personally don't think any of those would be a good match for your henry... I'd get LDS or someone to build me a 4x8 in the same dimensions as the 8x8 (width and depth, not height obviously).

Uhmm, I said Go-light (56 lbs) not Goliath. But I don't get the whole volume wars thing anyway, so I'm out. Good luck with your meaningless quest.

I've heard good things from LDS, but I'm the kind of person that has to be able to physically play it before I buy it. Living in Texas, that won't happen.

I apologize for my mis reading your post. I don't get the whole volume wars thing either, but in my current situation it's get louder or get completely lost. Thanks for calling it a meaningless quest though, it's much appreciated. Have a nice day.

If I could find one I would be all over it. Finding used SWR cabs other than the Goliath series or the workingmans in the Dallas area is pretty tough.

I would tell you to get an SWR 2x12 cab. That is what I used to run on top. It absolutely was king of the hill everywhere I went.

But, since you have OCD I won't bother telling you the rest of the formula.

If it's about volume it's easy, the 410. Later on a pair of them should get the job done.

edit: two cranked full stacks? Ouch!

In order to REALLY complete with two full stacks (I supposed this means 2 stacks of 8x12?), you will need ...

yeah, TWO full stacks of you own (2x 810), well probably a lot more ...

seriously, my guitarists have a total of 4x 12, and they can easily drown me out if they so wish (I am usually running 3x15 or 2x18)

in your case, if you go louder and finally be able to hear yourself, the guitards will start to think that they CAN'T hear themselves and turn up more... it's a losing battle for us bassist any way you dice it

If you like the sound of the 8x8, I think I might go with another and get a "Y" series cable to keep it @ 4omh. If you dealing with 2 full stacks you almost got to have two of your own just so you don't have to drive you cabs so hard. (IMHO) Besides...one on each side of the stage by each stack would look AWESOME!!!!

I also have a 750X and am SWR OCD. I even have a SWR tuner with blue LED's in my rack. Looks nice!
I originally paired the 750x with a Son of Bertha 1x15 AND a Goliath JR 2x10 but I blew a speaker in the 2X10 and decided to upgrade.
I got Megoliath. Holy moly that is the best sounding rig I've ever owned. It is large but is actually easier to move to gigs than the 2 cabs with handles. It's rolls really nice.
I've since replaced the 10" speaker and use the smaller 2 cab setup for rainy day gigs as Megoliath won't fit in the crew cab of my truck.
Get Megoliath and hand your wife a pair of scissors. It has enough balls to get you through the rest of your life.

Oh, I've spent money on earplugs and rarely end up anywhere near there cabs.

The lead guy would be willing to roll with his jcm half stack, but doesn't want to be drowned out by the other guy...

Maybe I just tell the Mesa guy to cut the cabs down to one...

Trying to talk sound quality over sound volume is like talking to a brick wall with he and the drummer.
