Opinions please: 2x12 + 4x10 Cab OR 2x12 + 1x15??

Hi Guys,

I am in a position where I need to keep my 2x12 cab (Which I love anyway). I need to add a cab for volume and to fill out the low end.

I have an Eden power amp with 2x channels, so I am fine there. I am leaning towards a new 4x10, but want to confirm your opinions.

P.S I am playing rock covers (Bon Jovi, STP, Rage, Guns N Roses, etc).

Should I add a 4x10 or a 1x15?

Any particular reason another 212 isn't being considered?

Another 212 is exactly what I would add.

The main reason was i was hearing the 4x10s would "push more air". What do you guys think?

Maybe, maybe not. Not all 410s nor all 212s are alike. Going with anything other than another identical 212 will have unpredictable results. For sure a 115 would be a bad move unless it's loaded with a 3015LF.

I run an Aggie 212 with an Aggie S410. All I can say is that they sound better together than either cab alone. I'd love to hear a matching cab with both of them. Might be better, might not.

I just purchased a Carvin brx 210Neo 600watt cab(4ohms) and this sucker blows away my Peavey 410tx (8ohm) ! This carvin 210 BRX handles my Low B and tons of volume! and it does it without breaking up.. i see NO need for a 1x15 cab with this BRX cab. i have a 1x15 that doesnt even get used now.

Another vote for 2x12 and another 2x12... I made the mistake ( for me) or getting a 4x12 - it's an amazing cab, just too big for most of my stuff.

The answer isn't "add a 410 or a 115"

The answer is "add the proper cab to work with your Ag 212, that's tuned to meet your tone goals while being a design that works with your cab."
The best answer to this is nearly always staying inside the brand.

Push more air is a different thing than add more lows, and neither of those configurations is guaranteed, on principle, to do one or the other.

Mixing and matching brands and configurations is a complete crapshoot. Might do what you want, might not. Might sound good, might not.

My answer to you question, given that you have an Ag 212, is add anther one. Each one will be taking less power than your current single cab, allowing you to add a little bit of low end eq, and be moving a lot more air. That should work really well with your eden power amp and preamp.

The other option would be to start over, flipping the single 212, and get another single cab, or pair of cabs better designed to meet your needs. The Ag is a nice cab, but there are many other options that are both tuned differently, and more efficient.

Great answer Chef, thanks for the help. I tried briefly with a Hartke 4x10 and it sounded kick ass, but it might have been the novelty of having 2 cabs hooked up.

The trouble is lugging the whole rig somewhere to test.

"lugging the whole thing"

That right there is another thing to consider.
There really are plenty of single cab options that are more capable than the Ag212-which is a nice enough cab, and good at it's thing....but if it's not meeting your needs, then...there are options now, ya know...

But the advent of 3015LF, 3012LF and 3012HO loaded cabs have opened the door to many new "pretty small/pretty light big performers."

You are right, most people are selling for a reason. However, that doesn't mean that there is something wrong with the gear they are selling. Many, many people on this forum are constantly flipping gear due to GAS only! I recently picked up a showroom clean TFB550B and HT112 at a very good price. Plus one of my two GS112's was purchased from a TB'r and it was like brand new.

These sellers on this forum have feedback for a reason. I wouldn't hesitate from buying gear on this forum from most long-time members. Especially the ones with good feedback.

Something I would like to add to Chef's excellent response: You can't necessarily judge a pair of cabs based on what one single cab sounds like. When I was playing with a single GS112, it sounded good but when I added the second cab, it changed everything. It's a setup that I love. With my small head and two small cabs (that suit my gig perfectly) I have easy load-in/load-out, plenty of power, and easy to get my sound.

Just something to think about.

I'm not surprised by the "I really like two small cabs" thing.
There are plenty of those too, and my current rig is either two small LDS 2x8's, or one Epi UL410.
