Orange 4x10 cab problem

Sign in to disble this ad
So at rehearsal the other day I took the grill off my orange obc410 because I was just getting strange low tones from my cab. I noticed that the upper right speaker wasnt moving like the other 3 speakers. It looked like it was more floppy than the other three and moving a lot more on the lower end notes.

I also noticed that my head seemed warmer than usual by the fan. I thought maybe a wire had came apart in the cab connecting the speaker and raised the impedance of the cab which was making my amp warmer but the speaker itself and wiring all seemed fine. Any thoughts?

Possible that the one moving more is just fine and the other 3 are just along for the ride.

The one that's moving more is likely blown, it flopping reacting to changes in air pressure by the ones that are working.

Is that true even if each speaker is in a separate compartment? I had a tech check it out at guitar center and he told me the speakers were fine. But then again it's guitar center... Haha

Battery test the whole cab at the speaker cable plug, see what moves and what doesn't.

Ok I've never done that before but I'm sure I can find out how from these forums.

Battery tested each speaker and was fine. Then swapped out the speaker with one of my ampeg speakers and still did the same thing.

Disregard the making my head hot deal I believe it was just hot in the rehearsal room.

Try doing the battery test on the speaker cable connected to the cab and check that all speakers are wired to move in the same direction. My SVT410HE did not have any power, and a friend tested it, two speakers were moving in and two were moving out so they cancelled each other. We switched them and the cab started working properly.

Only problem was that my we switched the wrong ones so it did not play well together with the SVT115E I got later, so we had to switch all 4 speakers to fix it. Should not be a problem if you only have one speaker acting up.

If all the speakers test good and it does the same with another speaker, it has to be a bad wire connection somewhere in the cab. Are they push-on type terminals and if so are any loose? Are they just crimped on the ends of the wires? I'd just go through everything, probably solder them all and check where they go through the panels as well. Has to be a bad wire connection somewhere.

That's a possibility too, wires or terminals mislabeled.

Found the problem. There was just a very poor soldering job on one of the terminal off another speaker that connected them. Easy fix I just overlooked it.

Another question has anyone disconnected the tweeter before? Just curious. I played around with it a little but I guess I just didn't have it at a volume to where I could really hear much of a difference.
