Question Orange Bass Terror 500 or TC Elec. RH450

Sign in to disble this ad
I want a nice backup/home practice head.

I have played a Orange Bass Terror and really liked it. I also had to use a RH450 as a back line and was very happy as well.

I use a Aguilar DB750 with a ampeg 810e with the gain maxed so it is nice and wooly, so that is the kind of sound I'm into.

What should I look into? Is there one I'm missing?

Between those two choises.. I would say the TCE.

But I would look at a GenzBenz Streamliner before either though.

I will have to nix the Markbass gear. I know a lot of people really like them, but every time I have ever tried one I have felt like they are missing something. I don't know what it is, I just can't gel with them.

So... long story short... no Markbass

I'm with you on the MarkBass stuff, just doesn't do anything for me. A couple of other options in the same ballpark, Mesa M6 Carbine, or if you like it tubier, the MPulse 600 or Big Block 750. I do likes me some Mesa bass amp- try some if possible.

I owned a Terror and now have a classic 450 and I'd go with the classic. The TC seems to have almost as much real world power, but has better EQ. The Terror sounded great, but seemed like a two trick poney....a great clean tone and really dirty. The EQ just didn't seem responsive enough. The TC will have more clean head room than the Terror which overdrives quickly. I also like the compressor on the TC.

I have a Tone Hammer pedal, and have slaved a power amp to it. Although I would use the Tone Hammer in a pinch for a DI I am not extremely enthusiastic about it.

I have read quite a bit and it seems like a lot of people recommend the Genz Benz Streamline 900 if you want to cop the DB750 tone in a smaller package. Should that have been added to the poll?

The DI of the Orange is way too hot.

That's 'cause it's line level, not mic level. apparently a 40db attenuator will solve this if they can't switch it at the board. I just bought one for my Terror for 20 bucks. The hot DI shouldn't be a deal breaker if you dig the tone.

I bought the Terror Bass so I can downsize my rig for easy carting. I still have my MPulse 600. The tones are similar... the M-Pulse is glassier, smoother. The Orange is fatter and punchier. The MPulse seems to compress the tone at about 60% gain and it starts to squash the punch with the onset of the tube fuzz. Plenty of EQ settings to help fatten it back up though. The Orange overdrives nicely, (less fuzz tones) at the same gain settings and keeps all the fat punchiness. Don't underestimate the EQ on the Orange just because it's 3 band. There's some good sounds in there.

I had a interest in the TB 500 a while back because I was looking at investing in a secondary amp to my main. I loved the gritty-dirty sound it could output and the thing has some volume I will say that. Also it's obvious small size made it easy to travel with and portable. Further researching the amp I ran across some pros and cons. Mainly the hot DI is a common thing that arose as well as many were reporting problems of them crapping out after a month or two brand new out of the box. I passed on it, but my main amp is a Peavey Tour 450 which I would suggest to anyone looking for a nice amp for a nice price. A lot of tone options as well as EQ and of course because it is Peavey the thing is very solid built.

Agreed, the TC Line Driver is outstanding. I really dig these amps. They are light weight and flippin loud!
