Question Orange TB 500and SP410 Advice- Help Please?

Sign in to disble this ad
I currently have an orange terror bass 500 with an sp410 cabinet. We have recently changed practice spaces in my band. The old practice space had great acoustics and I never had to turn my amp up over a quarter of the way. At the new place, I am having to turn up a lot more. I've noticed that it reaches a threshold where it "maxes out". Anything over this level begins to sound nasty. The low E sounds really muddy and nasty (drop D is even worse). I can back the volume down and it doesn't do this any more. It also seems like if I stop playing for a while then play consecutive E notes, the first few notes will be nasty, then it will begin to get somewhat cleaner sounding. It's like what is driving the speakers is worked too hard or something. My question is do you guys think I am just expecting more out of this cabinet than it can do? Would I be more happy with trading it for an Ampeg standard 4x10 for example? I know that the sp410 doesn't move as much air/sound as a traditional 4x10. Is this the problem or is it that the terror bass 500 doesn't have enough power? I am getting frustrated as I just want a rig that can cut through in a loud practice situation and still haven't found it (and $2000 later none the less ).

Any help or advice would be wonderful. Thanks talkbassers, you guys rule!

Also, I am running a 1980 Rickenbacker 4003 through it if that matters. I tried using my active fender jazz and it did the same thing so I assume this is not the problem.

Check the ohm rating switch on the back of the amp. You may have nudged it during the move. I'm running two of the SP210 cabs with my OTB, and the only difference i've noticed with the second cab is a slight loss of bass and a shift to a more mid tone.

It was set to 8 ohm. I am going to go to Atlanta discount music tomorrow and try my terror bass with other cabinets and see if the problem persists and vice versa to see if I can see what the limiting factor is and go from their. A new cabinet or head may be in my future unfortunately.
