Orange terror 500 watt with Peavey 810tx?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello again Talkbass!

I am saving up to purchase an Orange Terror 500 watt head, and need a new cabinet as well. I have been browsing clasifieds, and found someone selling a Peavey 810tx for $300.00. However it is rated at 400 watts ( link to all specs here : http://peavey.com/assets/literature/...s/80302053.pdf )

I find 300 dollars to be quite cheap for an 8x10 but my amp knowledge is minimal. I had asked about overpowering in a previous thread and recieved quite a few mixed reviews, some people seemed to think it wasn't a big deal and I could get away with out. Others seemed to think I should never bother having a higher wattage head than cab (then the thread got derailed into another underpowering discussion).

So, my question to you talkbass, is it worth getting the 810tx, and if not, any suggestions on a good cab? looking for something I can use for a long time coming

As always thanks for your replies in advanced

The Peavey cab seems like a good price!! With the Terror Bass head, you can run it at 4 or 8 ohms, so you get full power whatever...
However, having used my OTB 500, in numerous bands, size venues and festivals, I can almost guarantee you'll never have to run the amp full on, so your cab will be safe.

Enjoy

I've used my Orange TT Bass with a variety of cabs, and it's always worked out fine.

I've had good luck, and have gotten good tone from the majority of Peavey cabs I've owned or used over the years. That's not badly priced for a decent 8 x 10 cab if it's in clean condition. The Orange head in question should do just fine with that Peavey fridge sized cab.

I own this cab. Overall good ported 810. IIRC, it's a 800 watt cab, so not sure about your 400 watt comment. Price is OK. I've seen them go for $200-300. Offer less if not in good condition.

the spec sheet he linked to said 400w continuous, 800w program. That's 400 rms and 800 peak. If you're careful with the amount of volume and low end you're pushing through the cab you should be fine. I've run 400w cabs @ 500w for practices lasting several hours for a couple of years with no ill effects. Just be careful.

I had to post on this thread because a long time ago when I was in the market for new cabinet I looked at a Peavey 810tx, however I was too late on pulling the trigger and the guy sold it to someone else. Good solid cabinet. So I bought the Mesa PowerHouse 6x10 I have been using now for years. Then the other funny thing is couple months ago when I was browsing for a potinal amp upgrade I looked at the Orange TB 500, I love it's smaller form factor, but it packs a great amount of power. But I never bought one, something told me to stick with my Peavy Tour 450.
