Orange Terror + Barefaced Midget, the Review!

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi everyone,

So, yesterday was a big day! I finally got o try my new micro rig at a gig.
The gig was a standard pub gig, playing anything from the beatles to Guns and Roses and lady gaga (i know!).

My goal when i put this rig together was to have something as small as possible, that could be used on its own but mainly through a PA and that i was able to carry in public transports without a dolly!
I usually use my Mesa Boogie Walkabout Scout 12 but i wanted something that was lighter for small pub gigs where i want to get the best "blast 'em/ weight" ratio!

Lets start with the beginning:

The amp: great little amp, really light, looks very cool!
After using it at home for a few days i really find it to muddy, did a bit of research and decided to swap the original no name chinese tubes with JJ 12ax7.
It really opened the amp up, lost a bit of low end, gained a bit of high end and mainly got rid of the mud!
The gain drive is also a bit more natural and overall it just sounds a lot better!
I would definitely recommend anybody who has one to experiment with preamp tubes!
The EQ is pretty useless, it doesnt really allow for much tone shaping, it doesnt really changes the amps character, i really see it as a set and forget, you wont get many sounds from this head!

The cab: Barefaced Midget, made in the UK by Alex, a forum member!
The cab took a long time to be delivered, i ordered it before xmas, and the xmas rush plus the fact that alex broke his leg at that time made me wait almost 3 months instead of an announced 3 weeks!
The wait was worth it though!
Although this cab has a definit "home made" feel to it ( a lot of people have complained about that!) it is very well made, the only thing lacking is attention to detail, the finish isnt perfect, the grill although it looks great is a bit crooked, the corners look a bit cheap...
The important bits, like box design/tunning and woodworking are really well done which is the most important! It just doesnt have the "mmm, nice" of a boogie if you know what i mean!

The main thing though is that it is incredibly light (9kg) and more importantly, it sound great!

When combining both together i was really surprised by the result!
It has a really tight bottom end, with proper lows, not room shacking brown note lows, but very decent room filling capabilities!
The head doesnt allow for much tone sculpting but it really compliments that little cab so well it feels like they where designed to work together. The sound coming out of this combo is really really angry, its all crunch and grind even with the gain set low!
Volume wise, i had master and gain at 9 o'clock and i was louder than my boogie pushed close to its max and this rig wasnt struggling at all, it felt like it could go a lot louder without a problem!

All in all, i was really surprised and almost a bit annoyed!
Why? Because this cheap little rig sounds better than my fancy Boogie rig! Its louder, has more low end, better attack response and a nicer sounding tube drive!
It almost feels like the single 12" in the barefaced pushes as much air as the 2 12" from the mesa+extension!

I will keep my walkabout rig anyway, it is still a great rig, is a lot more versatile than the orange and has a great EQ that allows a lot more different sounds!
The orange/barefaced although it sounds great really is a one sound rig!
For rock with a pic, digging in like a pig it sound amazing!
For playing brown eyed girl with a fat smooth sound, the boogie is king!

To sum it all, i really think this rig is worth buying if your into nasty grindy sound, but want something that is not going to kill your back!
If your a set and forget kinda guy who like straight in your face tone with some dirt, this is the best small rig you could get!

If you want a versatile, clean and polite sound this is not the rig for you!

With both setups i dont think i will ever need a new amp unless i need to play Wembley stadium without a PA!

Hope some of you have managed to read this to the end!
Here come the pics!

(weight wise, the orange/barefaced totals at 13kg, the mesa on its own is 25kg plus 18kg or the extension!)

To me it sounds a lot like "are you gonna be my girl" from Jet!
Thats the closest sounding tone i can think off and the kind of tone it does best...
Hope it helps!

Cool! After that grill wasn't perfectly flat we changed the manufacturing process so they are flat now and added another component to make the fit better.

I'm glad to see that my engineering predictions of the Orange + Midget moving almost as much air as the whole Mesa stack were correct!

Stick a different head on the Midget (particularly on a Midget T) and you can get a huge range of tones (deep, smooth, fat, clear, bright, etc) - the Shuttle 9.0 is a popular match which goes very loud.

Have you tried the Walkabout head with the Midget?

Nice!
Any chance i could send you the grill back and have it exchanged or tweaked?
It really is the only visual think that annoys me!

I havent tried the cab with the walkabout head yet, need to get a speakon to jack cable and i will give it a go!
Also, i wasnt implying that the lack of versatility came from your cab, its really more the heads fault, the orange EQ is pretty useless compared to most modern EQ's available on most amps!

nice rig(s). That midget is awesome. I use a fEarful 12/6 and the midget makes it look big. I know Alex and Greenboy are both blazing new trails in bass cabs. I too was shocked at how much air a single 12 cab can push. Once that midget is pretty damn cool.

I can't stop telling people how much I love my Orange Terror Bass, or help but reccommend it. It's easily one of the loudest heads I've ever played, other than an old SVT, and the tone is perfect for any rock setting. I can't say I'd use it for jazz/r&b gigs, but its ability to power huge cabs along with small rigs like your set-up makes this amp near perfect in my book.

Cool, that cab is just what I want for my Orange Terror, and yeah the Terror is loud, it seems to almost rival my GK 1001rbII for volume (though I haven't turned either up all the way)

sorry if i didnt catch it, but with the mesa walkabout, is that a combo or cab under it? or is it a 112 cab?

The top one is the walkabout scout, 12 inch combo, the lower one is a 12" extension!
They are both 4 ohms but the walkabout handles 2 ohms without any problems!

I have the Barefaced Compact and it is indeed a great little cab. Still can't believe its 27LBS for a 115. My markbass cmd121p 112 combo definitely feels heavier by comparison.

I'm looking for a small compact cab cuz my ampeg isovent is 130 pounds! Like my dad loved the sounds I got from the walkabout but it isn't enough power for me. I guess the extra cab would help. But would you say that bare face would be awesome with a 210? What did the bare face run u?

+1, looking forward to hearing the results.

Nice looking little rig.

A guy brought over his Orange Tiny Terror to try a cab I had for sale and it was one powerful little bugger. I just listened, didn't tweak the controls and also didn't compare it to my Walkabout, wish I had.

It likely depends on the efficiency of your 210. The Compact is fairly efficient. Also, you should not think of the Compact as a traditional 115. While they have good lows they are not scoopy sounding and dont sound like a traditional 115. Much more punchy.

I paid $850 shipped for my Compact plus customs taxes.

If you like the tone of your walkabout your best bet is get the extension cab made for it. It will be way louder.

Very nice! I bet that rig sounds great! The Terror Bass has a unique voice (which is apparently highly affected by tube choice), but you can get it to be reasonably "flat," and it is an absolute powerhouse!

Give us some time and we'll do you a replacement grill: We used to clamp them to get 90 degree corners and foolishly assumed they'd dry flat but clearly sometimes they don't - hence we now clamp them flat too. Sorted!

I have a new update on the rig!

After two uses the Orange Bass Terror died on me!

Last week it cut out twice during the gig, i played around with the kettle lead in the back and it came back on so i assumed it was just a bad connection and carried on!

Yesterday, it started doing the same thing and then just died! No lights, no sound, no nothing! Checked the fuse, tried with another kettle lead, nothing, its just gone....

Im really annoyed and although it is still under warranty i really dont feel confident in orange anymore!
Can you really rust an amp after it failed twice in three uses?
Did i just get a lemon or is it just a crap amp with bad QC?

Will call orange on monday and see how they handle this situation and keep ou posted.
