Orange Terror Bass 1000 , Dirty?

Sign in to disble this ad
Looking to purchase the Orange Terror Bass amp to match with my ampeg 8X10 for hard rock band. Not worried about price as the 1000 watt version is only a hundred $more.

Probably dont NEED 1000 watts but my question is can the 1000 watt head do the same dirty tone as the 500 without getting ridiculously loud? Or am I better off getting the 500 to get dirty tone without getting tooooo loud. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Not 100% sure, but I believe that with a high gain setting, you could get the Orange overdrive sound at any volume level you want.

Tried the Terror out today. I don't think it does dirty... My frame of reference? Walkabout Head. Does overdrive WAYYY better.

man, i hate that i'm saying this.....but, ya' just gotta play em'! probaly the most used phrase in this forum. it's hard to get a real world feel in a "showroom". i've always figured more power is better, then again i like sabbath and motorhead and such......your ears and wallet know your situation better than i do! best of luck man!

The TT does clean or dirty exceptionally, just play with the controls a bit. The try it idea is, of course, the best way to make a decision, but not always an option.

Does the Terror 500/1000 pull off the AD200 sound at all?

IMOO, no. Tried the terrors side by side with the AD200 yesterday. To this individual, no comparison. AD200 blew the terrors away on terms of tone and quality.

Yeah I was thinking the AD would and should for that matter. Just wondering if the Terror's are in the same tonal neighborhood.

I think the TTs produce the Orange vintage tone very well, but the AD200 does sound a bit different. Big difference in cost, for what I hear is a minor tone variation.

I personally think the Orange Terror is too compressed & quick sounding to sound good with a sealed cab like the Ampeg.

Man, everyone seems to be hearing these Terror Bass heads a bit differently. It is a little surprising how versatile they are when you look at how simple the tone controls are, but there are a lot of tones in there. We recently reviewed the Terror Bass 500, SP210 and SP212 in issue #6, and while I did not do the main review, I did get a chance to compare the Terror Bass 500 to my AD200. It seems to me that you can dial in a good bit of the tone of the AD200, but only some of the feel. That's where the AD200 pulls away. But for the size/weight/cost difference, the Terror Bass gets close enough for kudos, in my book.

These aren't the best reference clips, but I did capture Damon Waller playing both the Terror Bass 1000 and the AD200 a couple of NAMM Shows ago:

Damon through Terror Bass 1000

Damon through AD200

And I also took these heads down for Phil Maneri to check out:

Phil through Terror Bass 500

Phil through AD200

As far as running the Terror Bass 500/1000 through a sealed cab, I have done this with what I consider very good results. The 500 really tested out well, with burst power of almost 1,000 watts (into a 4-ohm load), and you can definitely thicken up the EQ a bit (gotta crank the mids, though).

Hope this helps, some.

Tom.

I run my TB500 through an Ampeg 810e-
I actually prefer it to my Mesa 400+-
Much easier to dial in the tone I want.
