Orange Terror vs Ampeg SVT CL

Sign in to disble this ad
The biggest problem with my SVT-CL is its weight. It is the cause of my current back disc problem.

Those with experience with both amps, would I be disappointed if I got an Orange Terror for my main amp and sold the SVT?

Is there a major difference in tone comparing the two?

Is the OT popular because of its low weight?

Any opinions would be appreciated.

I own the Terror amp and have owned the SVT also. I get great tube tone out of my Orange Terror. Nothing compares to the SVT but I am really blown away with the Orange Terror simple light and crank the gain for great tube tone.

Well, this guy on craigslist is asking $800 for it and $200 for his crap Kuston 4x10 and he won't split them for sale or a trade for an SVT-CL

Couldn't I buy the OT new for about $800?

I don't think he'll get anyone willing to make that trade one for one.

I offered my SVT for his Terror and cabinet plus $300. I think that is a pretty fair offer. You?

More than fair. I don't think the Orange terror will cop the SVT vibe totally, but for the weight savings, it's close enough.

Well, the guy is a D-bag it appears. He seems to think my SVT for his Terror straight is a fair deal. Wow. I don't even know him and I want to punch him in the face.

Orange Terror, I'll check it out when I throw my back out with my CL. The heavy amps cry out for permenant installation, like a power plant. Thanks for the OT tip......

have you considered a Traynor YBA 200-2?... with the right cab these can be very ampegish and only weigh about 45lbs. I live about an hour from ya and youd be more than welcome to try mine sometime...

Nah, I have tried Traynor and I didn't catch any comparison, but the Traynors are priced nice.

I tried a bunch of tube heads when I was looking and none came close to what I get from the SVT.

I probably wouldn't have gone through with the deal anyway with the guy with the Terror. Even though it breaks my back, the SVT-CL is the king of bass amps and I love what it does for my playing.

How much you asking for the svt? You know on ebay some people are selling the orange terrors for well under $800 with a best offer also.

I don't want to sell my SVT and I don't think this is the forum in which I could even answer that question. Sorry.

I am very happy with my Orange. On it's own it's not quite in SVT territory but still sounds great, just a little of it's own tone. In a mix it I don't notice the difference. I got my BT new for $700 shipped on eBay. One other thing about these is that they come with a nice, rugged (thus far!) gig bag. A bag for most micro runs $60-100.

You should be able to get the Terror Bass new on Ebay for under $700.

I kept my SVT CL and bought a LMII for easy carry thanks to the 500 threads by Jimmy; and then the rat sold the little amp; I think he's prejudice against Italians

Close enough for a bunch of drunks at a bar and priced at about $400 used
Was in the same boat as you and was afraid that TT wouldn't get loud and clean; also contemplated 7 Pro for about the same $$

I think the word got out that you wanted to punch him because he lowered his price to $700 just for the amp and no cabinet.

Orange Bass Terror's have been going on ebay for less than $700. Also, and this is what I am waiting for, the new Bass Terror 1000 is coming out this year and there are going to be a lot of used 500 watters hitting the market.

If the used Bass Terrors are priced anywhere close to the Tiny Terrors, I'm expecting to find some used ones between $300-$500.

Have not been able to really put my Bass Terror through the ringer yet, but initial sentiment is that if you want tube tone, it delivers big time.

Does it sound LIKE an SVT? Yes...

Will you be able to hear the difference if you put them side by side solo? Yes.

Will you be able to tell the difference in a live band mix? Unlikely.

I found the YBA to have much less power than the SVT-CL. I had both and got rid of the YBA after 1 gig. Sounded great in my basement and small gigs, but had no headroom on large gigs with a 4x10. YMMV...

Ha! Now it is $675.

I will wait for the 1000 to come out and get a Terror for $350.

If he drops it to 350, then deal.

Would think it will be years before the TT on the used market get to $350

Again, these are the tiny terror (for guitar) but look at the prices. I would think the bass terror would be somewhere pretty close to these prices when they start hitting the used market...
