Original Ampeg 8x10 sawn in half

Hi,

Just wondering what people thought regarding an original American made Ampeg fridge 8x10 that has been sawn in half to make it into a 4x10.

I am trying it out tomorrow and I reckon it would be difficult to sell-on if indeed i do buy it.

I know the job will be done well because the fella im looking to buy it off knows his stuff and my valve amp specialist assures me that he (this is his mate) has done a really really good job and has gigged with it for decades!

Thanks for any advice,

Well, in essence, those cabs (the 8-10) are actually four sealed 2-10 cabs all stuck together anyway. In fact, unless there is a problem with the seal, usually you can push in on the left speaker of a pair and the right one will "bulge" out. So, if he did it in a way that it is properly sealed, and it looks/sounds good, it shouldn't be a problem. I run an old Ampeg B40 cab (sealed 4-10) that is a slightly different beast, but it sounds amazing with my V4 on top.

Thanks for the info. My concern is selling it on or paying over the odds. Hes looking for 350 euro but i dont think i can fork out that for it.

Ill play it and try make a judgement call then.

Way too much money IMHO for a hacked-up cab.

The "value" of the cab is gone once anyone takes a saw to it. Its value now is the value a homemade 410 box would have no matter what is started out as. It is "worth" very little now.

Why would anyone do that to an 810? Ampeg makes a 410HE which is pretty much half a fridge...

Some peoples kids...

This. He hacked it up, and it's worth very little now. As in, maybe 200 euros, definitely not 350.

If he did a good job, then structurally and sonically it's a fine speaker. Really is 1/2 an SVT. But yes, any value that was attached to being an SVT, or any brand-name, company-made speaker is now gone.

I don't know what used gear prices are like over there, but if I was worried about resale value, I wouldn't give very much for it at all.

If it's something that you really wanted, like "I love my fridge but it's too much, I wish I could get 1/2 of one" and you intended to keep it and play it for a long time, then maybe it'd be worth a little more, but only to you.
