Other places to sell a cab that's not CL!

Sign in to disble this ad
Ok, I'm pretty new here and I don't want to step on toes. So please let me know subtly if I'm outta line here. Is there a better place to sell used bass gear than eBay or CL? I know there's a forum here for it, but I'm not a sponsor and I don't plan on selling things very often.

Thanks, Ritch

The amount of money that it costs to pay for a year of membership here is more than worth what you get, even if you only sell one piece of gear.

It's worth becoming a supporting member to sell it here - TBers know what they want, and if they want what you've got they'll find you.

I just found this place and I love it. I haven't delved too far into it yet though. I'm sure I will be a supporter. Not sure if it's by donations, subscription, community service...

I read this site with an iPhone. There's nothing to the left. I'll check it out on a real computer.

Why don't you like CL? Just asking. It's really no more than a bigger version of the old fashioned classified ad in the paper. Maybe the market in your town sucks. Maybe I'm fortunate enough to live somewhere where with a little patience, I've been able to find pretty much anything I've needed, and sold a few things too, without ever once having to do ebay or anything else that involves stuff like paypal, shipping, etc. I think ebay's a total ripoff but that's just me. I prefer local, face to face, with a handshake, like the old days. Here, musicians aren't out to screw each other over with raw deals, quite the opposite. If someone is trying to pass off something like that, you'll see a bunch of people posting, "hey, watch out for this, it's not the real thing" or something to that effect.

Maybe your experience is different, if so, fine. I just don't get it. Why trust someone you've never met to ship something across the country, get it there in one piece, and have it be what it's supposed to be when you can go to their house, meet them, check the stuff out, or go to their gig, hear it in action, hand them some cash, take it out of the rack and bring it home with you.

Maybe I'm just old fashioned but I like it that way.

Welcome, Rich! You know what's funny, I just listed two huge Ampeg cabs on here today and within one hour I had an offer for both. It's an EXCEPTIONAL place here to sell, if you got what someone is looking for!

If you're looking at other places though, Craigslist is great but also you can check out your local musicians pages. For example, Western New York (where I am) has a forum for musicians. It's lightly traveled but great nonetheless. Besides that, always the old newsprint!

Pretty soon I'm going to pull all my ads off CL.. The scammers have been peppering my inbox pretty frequently, and lately the responses are more concerned about my love life than the cab I'm trying to sell.. this is getting ridiculous..

You become a member of a close knit family of bass players who care about you and your needs! We will be here to answer all of your most complex questions like wich fender is best for metal? Or should i get a 18 for lows and put a 2x10 on top for highs? or who is better victor, claypool, or flea?

Or you may just get a avatar, more data storage, and people tend to treat you and your questions a little different! Oh and you can ask about prices and not get in trouble for secretly trying to do some back door trade or sell when all you really wanted to know was if you were getting screwed.

It's about the scammers on CL! I can't take it anymore! I'd use eBay but I'm trying to sell an 8x10 and shipping it would be as much as the cab.

When posting your 'for sale' ad on CL, always ask that people include a phone number, or you won't reply. You'll still get some scamspam, but just ignore it. With a little practice, it's very easy to spot the scamspam. "$400? Really?" (spam); "Do you still have the item?" (spam), "I am very interested in your item, however I am out of town at this time however I will pay you an additional $100 over the asking price for your item, I will send a check to you by courier...." Yeah, scamspam...

GC or pawnshops are less hassle than Craigslist, but of course they will only pay a bottom dollar price because they will have to resell your used item at a profit. And in general, used equipment retails for about half the new cost, so guess how much they'll offer you?

There are other musician's forums that don't require a paid membership to post for sale ads, but it would be indiscreet to mention Harmony Central by name, so I won't.

I use Craig's List occasionally and find most of the interest for my gear comes from outside the area where I live. This search engine Nationwide Craigslist Search Engine - CI crawls all Craig's Lists. Google picks up ads, too. So be prepared and include an offer in your ad for a sale-by-mail (for example, state terms like will ship via USPS, CONUS only, PayPal only, etc.). Offers like this show the remote viewers that it will be easy to buy from a seller like you.

IMO, TB is the best place due to the sense of community. I post in CL, but find it far less productive. TB reaches a specific audience. Some towns have their own special online classifieds, so try that? HArmony Central used to be good, but I don't go there anymore.

Mostly true, but why limit yourself to one site? The world is a big place and not every bass player is aware of Talk Bass. By using multiple sites simultaneously, you increase the odds of moving the item more quickly. In the end, who cares where it sells? The money is green from wherever it comes.
