Other speakers in a TL606

I know that most everyone on TB says the Kappalite 3015 is THE speaker for this cab. I built one a couple years ago and loaded it with a $69 Carvin PS15 and I am quite pleased with it. I'd like to hear from other TBers about their experience with different speakers in this cab, pro and con.

I'm guessing that quite a few decent bass drivers would be OK in this cab. It's a basic ported box, so it has a particular internal volume and port tuning frequency. You can model a whole bunch of drivers all at once in the same box, and decide which ones seem acceptable.

If you're thinking of cutting plywood, it would be worth comparing the TL606 to one of the published fEARful designs, just to see which one gets you closer to what you want. In either case you can adjust the box parameters -- volume and port tuning -- by appropriate changes to the dimensions in the plans.

I have no experience with other speakers in this cab (Mesa Diesel 1x15) and that's for a good reason

I've tried quite a few drivers in my various TL606 builds over the years, and heard many others in other people's cabs. This was my favorite by far:

tl606

This is what I put in mine.

beyma sm115/k
They sound at least 200% better than the ev drivers that were in before. I think they were dl15x's. Mind you very old drivers.
I use mine as subs for a small dj/band system. They sound so good I am buying 2 more old tl606 cabs to refit. Not sure if they are ideal for bass guitar though.

Funny, ironic, and sad that you should mention this
I built a TL606 in the mid 80's.
It originally had an EV 15L that sounded very good (to me) but eventually it needed a recone.
I used a Carvin 8 ohm 400 watt driver (I think the Pro or PS series)
I ran this speaker for 20 years and loved it and it was something like under $80 shipped. It was reasonably effecient and took tons of power.
Thanks to TB, I learned about the fabulous 3015 Kapalite and installed one 2 weeks ago.
In hindsight it was not worth the money. In some ways I prefer the Carvin better.
Just because Carvin doesn't list specs, build there own speakers, have on staff acoustic engineers, etc. does not mean they don't sell excellent drivers at bargain prices IMO/IME.

I built two of these cabs 25 years ago in LA when I was working at the TV studios. Still have them. Initially, 30 years ago I built a 15x12 cab using the EV plan for the 15 side for playing guitar through a plexi head. I like to be different, and it was a deep dark sounding cab. I made that cab into a rolling tool box for use at NBC.
I used Peavey Scorpions initially, then Vintage Magnavox, EVM-L, and Kappalite Neo's more recently. I actually liked the Peavey's best, and still have one from 30 years ago, and one Magnavox. Sold the Neo's. I thought it would make the cabs lighter switching from the EV. They didn't make the cabs seem any lighter, and they didn't sound as nice as the Peavey. They never really got a chance to be broken in though.
