will a overdrive work with a solid state amp? or is it more of a tube thing.

Using overdrive effects, like pedals, on front of a solidstate amp can work beautifully. Simply overdriving the amp by cranking it up is mostly a tube amp thing. Clipping power transistors don't sound too musical. There are a couple of exceptions, like old Acoustic amps for a certain ratty tone but in general, solidstate and overdriven don't go together. Many tube amps tone is sought after with the specific purpose of overdriving both pre and power tubes. Some solidstate amps have emulations of this sound built in but it's more of a built-in effect box than it is simply overdriving the transistors.

Many "hybrid" amps that have a tube preamp coupled to a SS poweramp give you the ability to overdrive the preamp tubes, then the SS poweramp simply makes that sound louder. It can sound quite good but it's not the same as making power tubes take a beating.
