They are what they are. There must be some reason for their overwhelming popularity (although I can't imagine what that would be for Ampeg).

The idea of anything being overrated is pretty perceptive but IMO, Fender and Ampeg have proven their worth many times over. If you've ever spent time in any pro studio or played overseas, you are likely to see an Ampeg rig of some sort. If you are ever asked to record on someone else's music, you will most likely have to record at least one track on a Fender. So I guess if top quality gear that has been used in the industry for over 50 years and still stays relevant to producers and performers all over the world is enough to be considered overrated, I would say absolutely.

...and this comes from a guy who has never owned a piece of Fender or Ampeg gear in his life.

On a different note, a seriously underrated gear is reverse. My '62 Chevy pickup will haul way more in reverse than any other gear.

Fender and Ampeg

P-Bass through an SVT, I guess face melting in general is over rated.

I guess a Schecter through a Peavey amp is okay, that's not too over rated.

Don't know about overrated, but I think 1x15 cabs are seriously underrated.

I think Fender and Ampeg are great. However, I own neither and am quite happy with what I have.

All of the brands that might be able to be judged as overrated have qualities that got them there in the first place.

To me a piece of gear can be considered to be overrated if people will buy it sight unseen without ever having done any direct comparisons. That's different of course from having enough experience with a given brand to buy sight unseen, but when I hear people tell someone to buy a certain brand with no idea of what the persons needs are or only because they've heard that it's the best, then you're definitely seeing a good example of being overrated.

Bass site I know, but a couple of great examples come from the guitar realm, in particular if you ask someone about an acoustic guitar and they say Martin or Gibson, or guitar amps they say Marshall, then that's an example of some great products that are generally overrated, particularly because there are some pretty poor products from all three of those brands to go along with their legendary successes as well.

This most definitely goes for Fender and Ampeg as well. The reason they're so well known is because of the great products they've given us, but when people blindly vote for them over any other option, then overrated. Anyway, I don't think that most of the users of Fender or Ampeg have stuck with them for the wrong reasons, so, not overrated, IMO.

I don't really have a stake here because I currently do not use either brands. I would like to know why you feel that way, so for the sake of discussion it would be nice if you elaborate.
