Padding A 6" Mid Driver?

Sign in to disble this ad
OK, I've got an 18Sound 6ND410 coming, which I intend to swap into my Carvin LS1503 (w/3015LF woofer). Greenboy has always recommended padding these 3dB in the fEarful cabs, in order to match sensitivity with the Kappalite woofer.

My question is....Is there a simple way of doing this without getting into the crossover? For instance, a resistor across the speaker terminals or something.

I'm using the stock Carvin 3-way crossover.

???

Just build a fixed 8 ohm L-pad and put it after the crossover and before the mid driver, just like the fEarful crossover schematics show. Greenboy plays with the impedances a bit in his designs, so if using a generic crossover, also use a generic L-Pad, not one of his. 3.5dB is a more convenient number since you can do the whole thing using five 8 ohm resistors.

PM me if you need more info. I may still have the Carvin crossover schematic kicking around.

I'm sure you know but just in case, those resistors will not get close to their rated wattages without being mounted on a heatsink.

They shouldn't need to with the wattages they're seeing.
