Paging British vintage experts: Richard Allan Type Atlas 15 speaker, a hidden gem???

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi.

A fellow bassplayer posted a question about the speaker in the title in an Finnish musician site, and as I have one in indefinite storage, I replied.

My reply was in the lines of it making a decent door-jamb in bass use, ie. not worth much. Based on personal experience from the 90's when it saw a very, very brief "duty" in a cab.

Now I do know that a ridiculous e-bay listing "a quality vintage speaker doesn't make", but what the heck???

Richard Allan Atlas 15 Speaker Driver - 15" | eBay

Mine may be defective as I got it for free back in the day IIRC, the suspension is as stiff as an customs officer in any case, but it sure didn't sound blown, just weak and had a rather limited frequency range. We fidddled a bit with a signal generator and the porting, but it just sounded weak. Not necessarily bad for someone who loves vintage bass tone, just weak.

Any experience about the said speaker?

Regards
Sam

You've probably had no reply because no one's ever heard of these. I haven't.

Talking Well!

The richard allen 15" driver was very popular for organ bass and was a standard unit in some compton organ cabs.
Its not a high power speaker but its efficient and can produce a very warm clear bass sound, just not that loudly by todays huge X max high power standards.

Hi.

Thank You guys.

I might just have to give it another try, since I'm a helplessly vintage kind of a guy .

And thanks for the Compton and the general organ connection Bassmec, through that I'll probably be able to find some "correct" cab dimensions.

I do remember RA drivers but that was long ago. My feelings were that they were a fairly cheap manufacturer but that could well be off base. Sorry I can't be of more help Sam.

Hi.

Thanks Paul, I was hoping You'd chime in .

Despite of the cast basket, cheapness is the feeling I got from it as well.

One of these days I'll test it, and since the information about the driver is pretty vague in the 'net, I'll post my results. Will take a lot of time before I'll do that though .

Regards
Sam
