Passive and Active crossover capability in one cab

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello Everyone, First post here, but been lurking for about five years. Anyway I've finally got all the parts to a fEarful 12+6 on the way. Yay! I'm planning on using greenboys passive crossover design. I'll be running the cab with a Crown xls 1000 in bridge mode most of the time.
However with the ability to bi-amp with this amp I want to experiment with this cab at times as well. Quiet gigs, practice, etc to see how much of a difference bi-amping can make. This is my first foray into bi-amping. I know my wattage will be way down in this fashion but for now I'm fine with it.
My question is what is the best/simplest way to get the cab to run both styles of crossovers?
Do I need to isolate the passive crossover entirely when bi-amping or just have a separate input that goes direct to the drivers?
I just what as much flexability as possible.
Thanks Abdul

Hey Abdul,

Best place to ask this stuff is in the current fEarful thread. At least a couple guys have done this and posted diagrams of their scheme in one of the past threads.

Ideally you do. But you can bi-amp using the passives too, which makes for an easier switching system. The downside is that you can't vary the crossover frequency.

Since you will be building the cabinet, I would add two extra input jacks direct to the speakers, with a lug cutting off the "backward" path to the crossover filter when the jacks are engaged. (The only downside is that you need to take care that the jacks do not oxidize and fritz on you over time.)
