passive vs active input

Can an amp be damaged by running an active signal into a passive input? or is it just a matter of introducing unwanted distortion by having too hot a signal?
my amp doesn't have an input for each, just a db cut switch for active, sometimes I forget to use that switch.

I don't think it can cause damage.

I always use the passive input and I've never had an issue.

Nope. I have an active/passive switch on all three of my GB amps. Plug an active (9V) bass in with the switch on passive. No problem after many years. All the active switch (input) does is cut a few dB. So, for the same volume, you need to turn the gain and volume knobs up more. The choice is yours.
