And yes, I have tried the mod you are talking about, but it was on a SM-500 amp I previously owned. I found that I preferred the tone of the unmodified preamp. The 'tone stack defeat' mod definitely provides more tube 'grunt' in the midrange though. As someone else stated in that thread, after applying the mod, the SWR sounded a lot like the original acoustic amps.
I usually run the SWR with a bump at 250Hz and treble dialed back to 9 o'clock. This flattens the frequency response as well, but retains the original clear, crisp character of the SWR preamp.
It's too bad Steve W. Rabe has dropped off the map, so to speak. I would love for him to chime in here on the factors that prompted him to design the SWR preamp in the way that he did.

Have you looked into the mod that brings the EQ pretty close to flat?
