Peavey 2x15/ 3015 Question

Sign in to disble this ad
Ok, I will be replacing my black widows with some 3015's soon. I wanted to start this now so I'm prepared when I can get the new 15s.
The peavey cab is a deep one, but it has the triangle ports like the shallow cab.
I will take a few pics and do some measurements tonight.

How would I figure out what port size to put on this cab? I'm not very good with math Also I'm not sure what to search for... I think I googled how to figure out port size in a box.
I was planning on blocking the triangle slots and putting a peice of PVC in or ABS. But that would probably be to simple, right? haha

But first I will reseal the inside with epoxy or caulk, then put in some baffling of some sort. With the 3015's and see what it sounds like, then go from there.
I searched around and found 1 person that had success with this in a shallow cab. Which makes me think I might not have to do any moding with the ports and such.
Any concerns?

If you give up on the whole project and want to sell the cab, let me know.......

I'm looking for a Peavey 215D.

Just curious why you would want to replace those Black Widow speakers. The cab is designed for them and they sound amazing in it.

Because you can strip about 17 pounds from the total weight? And drive it harder before farting out?

Exactly.
I'm scared of turning up my VB-2 to loud, and I want to drive the tubes I might get a Ampeg V4 down the road so I can drive the tubes and it not being to loud.
Also, I dont feel like I'm getting the lows I should be.

The main way the 3015s will give you more low end is mainly because you can boost a little more lows before farting out. On the other hand, they don't have the midbass hump a set of BW 1502 or 1505 will in a box that size, so it's not all that big a difference in some ways.

As I recall, the deep Peavey 215 had around 2.8 cubic feet per driver. Tuning the boxes a little lower will subtract from that but could nonetheless be an improvement with 3015 in there.

I like mids, but they were better in the shallow box. I probably should have kept it, oh well. The box is making alot of noise, so hopefully resealing the inside will help.
I'll measure the box when I get home.
Is there any links you have for some info on tuning? So I can do a little reading

Yes, I loved the BW's in my shallow 215 I bought new in the late 70's, but the cab (according to Peavey's response to my email) was only rated 200 watts. That was fine 30 years ago for my Centurion head's 130 watts, but my NeoPak's 350 watts would've been too much! I lined the cab with adhesive backed damping material from PartsExpress and wired each speaker individually. This way I can use two heads if I so desire, but also I can use my old GenzBenz ML200 head which has the bridge/mono switch for two outputs at 100 watts@4 ohms or a single output of 200 watts@8 ohms. The 3015's are EXACTLY what I needed!

Yeah, I hear you.
Guitar center had/s one on their used equipment part of their website. I went to my local GC and asked them if I could get it shipped to their store (Arl. Hts. IL) from Cali.
They said no problem, the cab was $243.00 (WITH SHIPPING they said) and I was cool with that.
Well that was last week. Yesterday, GC calls me and says no dice. The cab is too big and heavy to ship and it would cost over $200.00 to get to Illinois.
THEY DIDN'T KNOW THAT???
I asked them if it was possible to ship it and they said yes.
Typical Guitar Center. Clueless morons. All of them.
So, I had my hopes up to get ONE of the two 215D's that I want, but thanks to GC teasing me with that cab and then pulling the rug out from under me, I am back at zero. Thanks again GC, you've come through in a big way. As always.
Losers.
