Peavey 410 TX: Speaker Repair or Replace?

I've got a line on one for sale for $75. It has 'at least 1 blown speaker' according to the owner.

It's so cheap, I figure a 1+ hour drive is worth it. I'm not sure where I can get a speaker repaired here in Columbia, SC.

Assuming I buy this cab, will it be cheaper to get it fixed or email Peavey and ask for a replacement?

I know they're heavy, but reviews are positive. I just want something cheap (does it get much cheaper?!) and reliable to take out on shady gigs and leave at a rehearsal space.

In PV 4X10's I've repaired, the speakers PV sent me were Eminence Delta's. I believe they were in the $75 range. I have two older PV 4X10's. Originally these had 4 ohm Eminence speakers, not to robust, probably Alphas. I replaced the speakers in one with (discontinued) 150 watt 10's from MCM Electronics (closed out for $11 each) and they far outperform Eminence Betas. MCM has several bass 10's that would work well in that cabinet.

IMHO, the 410TX is a pretty nice sounding 4x10. It's heavy and loud. Not sure about repair cost on the broken driver, but a replacement would be in the $75 - $95 range. These cabs come up used in the $150 - $200 range in my area, so you might factor that into your thinking.

I'm with you on the logic of using one of these as a "leave it" cabinet for dodgy gigs and rehearsal space. For those purposes, the more beat up the better.

P.S. As near as I can tell, the stock driver is a Peavey Sheffield TVX 1035-8.

Maybe it's jsut me, but if the seller says up front that it has "at least one blown speaker" then IMHO the others are VERY suspect and thus the cab is only worth the empty box; therefore, $75 would be wayyyy out of line, especially having to drive an hour to get it!

I'm all for buying used gear, but try and avoid gear which seems to be abused.

If it was me, I'd give this one a miss.

Though on saying that, you could contact Peavey and cost a replacement speaker.
