Question Peavey Bass 400 Normal Problem

Sign in to disble this ad
I have an older 400 model. I think it's a B version. It seems that the Normal side is about 1/100th the volume that the Distortion side is. I cannot see any burnt or destroyed parts inside. I remember many years ago I had my paino plugged into it from the headphone jack. Could this have caused the problem? Anyone know what might be the culprit?

The resistors, capacitors, pots and circuit board in the input stage can sure be broken and still look OK at a quick glance. Some components can be completely broken and still look new.

I have worked on that (IMHO) awful amp a couple of times and although it has fiber glass circuit boards (if my memory serves me), these things are old now. Measure all components with a multimeter and use a magnifying glass to check the PCB.

Or (perhaps quicker), replace all components in that input section.

Replacing caps

is the same thought I had when I came up with no other solution, but next to parts guessing I was hoping to find out what went bad. I am sure that there is alot of leakage, but l have to be practical about this and realize that in perfect working cond. it would be hard to get $100 for it.
