Peavey BW, JBL K140 E140 compatability

Sign in to disble this ad
2 questions:

1) Does Peavey wire its speakers to be out of phase with JBLs?
2) What is the difference between a K140 and an E140? I am looking for a match for my K140, there is an E140 available on EBay now, would it be a good match with my K140?

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Jbl made a lot of their speakers out of phase with everybody else meaning voltage applied to the + terminal moved the cone in instead of out. Somebody else will have to help you with the rest.

Polarity, not phase. Use a 9v battery to test it, with the + pole of the battery attached to the + pole of the driver the cone will move outward.

Yes, polarity. If you chain it to another non-jbl cab thinking everything is the same, they would then be out of phase. Or perhaps the correct term would be reverse polarity. Anyway, one would be moving in while the other is moving out.

The K140 is wired : Black = Positive, Red = Negative. I would get another K140 if I were you. You can usually find them on Ebay. Although the " K " series is'nt listed, the " E " series is.

the differences: E140's are slightly more efficient (sensitive) @100db than a K140 @98db and they handle a little more power than the K series. they're also 7 lbs heavier. IMO, both speakers sound pretty similar.

Kinda disagree with this. I think the K140 sounds a little " sweeter " and the E140 a little harsher in the upper mid-treble area. The K140 has a larger Xmax, if that makes any difference. Purely, imho, of course.

well, if you listen to the JBL comparison clips that i posted a couple of weeks ago, you'll hear that they sound more similar than different. they don't sound exactly the same, but IMO, very similar. i personally prefer K140's over the E's, but the E's are no slouch, and there are some that have the opposite opinion of me (i.e. prefer the E's over the K's).

Yes, I used the E140's for 20 years before I got to play out of the K140's. I like both also. Hey, it's JBL !
