And the heaviest I've ever owned ! Seriously, if the damn thing were a good bit lighter, I'd still own it today. I keep all my gear down in my basement and I have a long, steep and skinny stairwell leading down there and it SUCKS hauling gear up and down there not to mention some of the venues around here that have horrible load in and out conditions around here (old Baltimore and DB row homes converted where you play two flights up or down and no elevator, etc. Heavy gear is a real drag in this town.

Again, LOVED the head but HATED the weight!

Yeah I've moved mine in some pretty tight spots. But then I'm a big burly man.... I generally carry it by one hand and one handle (but it rides on my caster equipped el whappo when ever it can). For stairs and such I carry it 2 handed via one handle.

I dunno what qualifies as burly.... but I clock in at 200 lbs. (average build) And I can handle mine just fine. I usually ignore the handles and cradle the unit against my chest in a "bear-hug" type hold...

just recently traded the Ampeg pr1832-he cabinet I was using with this setup for an Ampeg svt-810e... the head really likes this cab for more bumpy old school tones..

I've become so attached to this amp that I actually purchased a second Classic 400 a few months ago (Next TalkBass project : Dual Classic400 rig of doom pix )

Like SubMonkey, I am just over 200 lbs. and about average build and I have carried the amp by one handle in one hand (though it was a strain) and with two hands on one handle held up to chest level. But yes, everyone must admit, it is probably the heaviest head out there!

I am still excited about the VB-2 and VB-3 amps and will have to get one later in the year once we all see if any craftsmanship/quality issues arrise! Then I can leave the 400 in the studio and bring the VB to gigs!

Bear hug? One handle? Im carrying the thing but I dont really want to talk about it. The Peavey Classic 400 - for the burly or weak but motivated bass player. Ill be looking out for that dual c400 pic sub!

I've seen 2 other than mine.... in the $700 range. I got mine for a stupid low price of $350 with a flight case but no tubes. After the $300 in tubes and tech work, it did work out to be right in that same ball park

i guess 53 pages was about 48 too many.

i have relegated my C400 to my basement practice amp. i usually gig out with my warwick quadruplet preamp and crest pro 7200. there is a slight difference in the tone, but it's not twice the weight different.

robb.

removing tubes to decrease power output

Has anyone done this with the Classic 400? I'd like to decrease the wattage to reduce the pummeling my speakers take with this head. I've heard guitarists talk about pulling pairs of tubes to decrease the power; is this possible (or advisable) with the 400?

I know our Peavey Engineer has modded one to run EL34s which would reduce the wattage

Yeah..it is somewhere in the second half of the first thread...he gave detailed instructions on how to do the conversion....if you got the skills, time, and money...I'd say go for it!
