Peavey Combo 115 needs help waking up

Sign in to disble this ad
I purchased an older Peavey Combo 115 amp a few weeks ago, and it's been a great amp. One issue that I've noticed is occasionally the amp needs to be turned up pretty loud to initially "wake it up." At first there is no sound when I plug it in, but I turn the volume and gain up to 3/4, and I can get it going. It seems like some type of loose connection or something, but I'm not sure. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Either a cold solder joint in the amp or an open in the speakers voice coil would be my guess.

If there are effects loop jacks clean both of them with contact cleaner (Deoxit).

In my previous band, lead guitar player had a Combo that did the exact same thing. He took it in but the amp shop he took it to did not find anything, and I did not get a chance to take it home to look at it myself. My suspicion though, going from memory, is that there's a switching FET as part of the protection circuitry that for some reason it's not getting switched "on" at startup. Once amp kicked on, it played flawlessly.
