Peavey Combo 300 on CL

Sign in to disble this ad
after missing out on the peavey max 700 offered locally, i have been feverishly scouring the CL ads in my area and the surrounding areas. i found this...

Peavey Combo 300 Amp

this amp is quite the distance away but the guy is willing to meet me halfway so it might be worth the trip.

i've read good things about this amp combo. it seems that there are variations of the peavey combo 300. is this one of the more desireable ones or on the cheaper end of the scale? in the couple of pics provided, it seems to be in pretty decent shape.

is the price right? this seems to be right around the asking price of the one's currently on ebay. there are none listed under the completed listings.

i know many say that this is a big heavy beast but will it be smaller and easier to handle than my current rig? sf bassman 50 2x15.

or should i just be patient and keep my eye out for one of the max/firebass 700's?

opinions please.

thanks.

I used to have a Combo 300, not sure exactly which variation though (it did have a BW 15 in it, that's about all I remember). It was my second amp and the first one that was big enough to do any sort of gigs with.

While it could get fairly loud, I didn't find the tone anything to write home about. I personally think that spending $340 is just too much for it. There are so many options out there nowadays (as opposed to the early 90's when i picked up mine) that I'm suprised these are still fetching that much coin. For not much more, you can get a used seperate head and cab that will outperform this in almost every way (I'm thinking something like a used Avatar, Hartke or Ampeg 4x10 in the $200 range, and a used GK 400RB or something along those lines around the same price. That gives you the added benefit of changing one or the other if you so choose.

And yes, that Peavey Combo weighed a ton and always felt awkward to carry no matter which way I tried. I had sold it to fund a used ear,ly 90's Fender BXR300C (basically the Fender equivalent) because it sounded light years better, IMO at least. Similar weight but the slightly narrower form factor made it a little easier to schlep.

There is some decent Peavey stuff out there....I wouldn't necessarily consider this one of those. YMMV and all that of course.

Peavey 300c

I used one a few years back for awhile with a large loud band. It was adequate for volume but the tone was bland. It's weight made it bomb-proof but awkward. I wouldn't pay more than 200 for one of those now. It would be hard to properly try out if you meet him half-way wouldn't it? It would be a step up from your bassman rig but maybe heavier and harder to wrangle. There are a lot of better heads available in that price range that will do more and sound better. IMHO pass.

That is one of the classic amps. I had one for ten years-I'd think 2 or 250 is a better price though considering the age of the amp.

I paid $100 for mine. I love the amp, but I don't $350 love it. It's a big heavy beast that is an akward tote, but it has enough volume to hang with a moderate band, and the tone is pretty decent. It's a great amp to leave at a rehersal space or something like that. Offer him $150 or pass.
