Peavey Combo 300...grill removal?

Sign in to disble this ad
I picked up an old Peavey Combo 300 yesterday for $60. There is a small tear in the cloth grill. I'm wanting to take off the grill and put some tape on the tear on the inside as a temporary fix. I also noticed the aluminum cone has some dents in it. I was just wanting to take a closer look. I'm not doing anything to the speaker...it sounds fine. I don't know how the cone was dented though without hurting the driver/speaker. So...any ideas how the grill comes off? Thanks.

Believe there are hook & loop fasteners (heavy duty version of velcro) in the corners. Try putting a short bend on the end of a wire coat hanger... work it behind a corner and pull. First one is the hardest.

From the images I've Googled, it's the Combo with the Black Widow speaker and silver aluminum strips on the sides of the grill, right? That is the same style on my 215 cab. It attaches via plastic-type hook and loop fasteners/Velcro. I remove my two top corner protectors and then slip in an allen wrench, using the "L" shape to pull a corner away from the fastener. Be sure to get the wrench behind the frame, not just the silver strip. I can then reach my fingers behind and work the others free. I use a pair of pliers to grasp the wrench, by the way.

This is how my grill is attached. It's possible that Peavey changed their mounting style since my 1978 215 cab.

YMMV

This is a BW with the silver strips. Are you talking about the 2 metal corner protectors on the amp cab? Also...have you ever noticed dents in an aluminum cone? Like I said, it's used so I don't know how it was dented but I've had it cranked at 1/2 volume and it sounds fine. Thnx.

Sorry, the two corners wouldn't pertain to your situation. I have to remove mine to pull the grill out. My unprofessional opinion about the dent is that it shouldn't be a problem, as long as it's not too deep.

I had a late 70's TNT 100, 45 watt amp with a 15" Black Widow speaker. That thing weighed nearly 100 pounds, plus it's size seemed bigger than needed. Maybe that's why it sounded so good to me, WAY back when!

There are a couple dent but the speaker sounds solid. I've been looking for a replacement just in case. I only found one so far from GC. It has to be a 4 ohm. Since I only paid $60 I figure it wouldn't hurt to put a little $$ in it. I was thinking about getting one of the metal grills for it that advertises on here. I think one would be under $25. The speaker I saw is in the link below.

I got a metal grill online from Reliable Hardware (or something like that). Good experience. Most TBer's will advise against just buying a speaker and bolting it up without checking the specs vs. cabinet size, porting, etc. Perhaps one of them will chime in. Possibly search "replacement speaker" and you'll see all of the recommendations for programs designed specifically for such use. I have had good luck searching forums and have bought speakers based on other's recommendations for similar cabs/combos. I recently redid my 215 cab with Eminence Kappalite 3015's and am more than pleased! I also lined the inside of the cab, also due to TBer's advise.

Good luck,

I'm in no hurry. I got the combo cheap and I'll use it as a back up. There's a small music shop here in town that works on equipment. I'm sure he'll be able to recommend a decent speaker. I'm open to any suggestions though...thanks.

Sounds like you're trying to buy trouble. From your description, there seems to be nothing wrong with that speaker. I've seen quite a few working speakers with dented aluminum dust caps. If it truly bugs you, I've sometimes been able to pop dents out with some tacky rubber cement on the end of my finger. But you can leave it alone, then you won't have to mess with the grill either. Play it and enjoy your good deal.

You talked me in to it. It's staying the way it is. I actually didn't know that was a dust cap...I thought it was the cone. I've had the volume up pretty good and all sounded fine. The custom grill still may be an option to get rid of the old dirty grill and do away with the tear. Thanks for the advice.

Cool Score! I gigged the tar out of one of these from 1977-1980, and it was flawless.
