Hi everyone,
I'm a new member though I have been reading TB for a about a year. I wanted to get some opinions on what mid-sized combo amp to buy.
I've been playing for about a year and started out with a Peavey 20W Micro-bass. About 6 months ago I found a great deal on a 4x10 Marshall cab with the MB450H amp.
I've found some guys and started jamming over the past couple of months, and find the micro-bass is just overpowered by the drummer and guitarists and the Marshall is just too big and heavy to haul out every week.
At a local pawn shop I've found a Peavey TNT 130 for $250 and an Eden Nemesis N15 for $300.
Any comments/ input on these 2 amps and are they a decent value at those prices?
Thanks |

Hmnn...
The sound is different.
Overall... It would be brighter to have a kickback cab and useable DI... If I'm guessing the TNT is a box cab.
Between the 2... the TNT has a better band mix sound... The Eden is a more useful gig tool.
I'd bet the TNT will be around after neuclear attack --- the Enden will just take one careless roadie.

| | Pat's the best! | | Join Date: Dec 2000 Location: Northern Virginia, USA | | I had to read this thread because I use a Peavey head and an Eden cabinet in my rig.
I had an early Nemesis combo and wasn't very impressed by the speaker enclosure built around it. I used an external Eden D210T cab and the sound from the external cab was much much better than the Nemesis cab sound. My Nemesis had a GREAT built-in head mated to a so-so at best speaker cabinet - IMO a really bad combination for a "combo" amp. The tweeter was pretty awful IIRC. The direct out was fantastic.
The TNT is built like a tank and won't ever break. If you need extra volume, the Peavey will be more likely to crank without farting. I don't like the amp section as much as the Nemesis, but the speaker section is probably more robust and will sound better in a full band situation.
You won't go wrong with either choice - they'll both do what you're asking for, and do it very well.
That said, I'd recommend the Nemesis combo, if only because it is substantially lighter and easier to move than the Peavey.
Personally, after decades of loving combos for my gigging / practicing purposes, I now prefer a small head and small speaker cabinet (or two). Lots more options; not quite as convenient, but still convenient enough. I think a better choice than either combos would be to find a nice used 2x10, 2x12, or 1x15" cabinet to leave at practice and carry your MB450H more. You'd have more options - you could add the new smaller cab to your current Marshall rig for extra volume/different tone.
You can probably find a real cheap crappy old used speaker cabinet on craigslist or something, leave it at your practice place, and carry the amp head and your bass with you to practice.

I'm also a huge Peavey fan. I just think Nemesis is in different class than the TNT. |

I've never played a Nemesis, so can't comment further. The 130 is my favorite of the TNT series, because of the parametric mid and crossover. I gigged one for years. It's larger and heavier than the Nemesis. If this is always going to be a practice amp, the extra weight and lack of a DI are non-issues, in which case I'd make 'em an offer on the TNT... maybe $125, depending on condition and speaker (most have an OEM Eminence; some have a Black Widow). |

I've been reading alot about how the Peavy's are indestructible, etc., I just wasn't familiar with the Eden brand but it seems to be getting good reviews. Thanks for the info. |

It gives me the practice Volume I need and can be an addition to my overall Marshall Rig down the road.
Thanks for the advice! |

| | | | I haven't played Eden's low end stuff, but as beautiful as their heads sound, I would be surprised if the combo wasn't decent. At any rate, those Peavy TNT's sound like utter garbage... my church has one of those downstairs in the practice room, and the tone is truly woeful to behold.

To say that they all sound like utter garbage... that's either an over-generalization, or we hear very differently. |

| | | | The TNT has plenty of power, it delivers low end, and it's durable, but the tone is just NOT good. It's just very muffled (and I don't mean I didn't have it EQ'ed right), lifeless, and cheap sounding. Sounds like a huge elephant farting into a gigantic tin can plugged into a subwoofer.

| | | | Nemesis I wouldn't take that Nemesis over ANY Peavey, but I'd surely take it over THAT Peavey.
The TNT is basically a rock-jam amp. Leave it in somebody's garage and don't worry if the dog pees on it or the car hits it. The Nemesis however has real tone to it.
I don't know what the deal is with the new Peavey TNT and TKO's. They were advertised for a long time before they came out, and there was conflicting statements about their weight. I don't get it. |
