Peavey Firebass 700 vs. Carvin 300 Pro Bass vs. Acoustic 220

Sign in to disble this ad
I have been talking to a fellow about a possible amp swap. I am in a state of confusion with which way to go. I currently have a Acoustic Control Corp 220 head w/ Acoustic 406 Transducer 1x18 cab in really good shape. I honestly have NO idea what this is worth .
The guy that wants it has offered a 1984 Carvin Pro Bass 300 with 4x12 and 1x18 cab($600asking price) and a Peavey Firebass 700 with a Peavey 215 cab loaded with 400 watt Delta 15a's(asking $500). Also 2 Traynor YS-15P cabinets were brought into the mix but i would have no head to play them with.
I am not sure if i want to keep my Acoustic(not really attached to it) or trade up. What should i ask and which amps are better?

If it helps i use Fender Pbasses and play heavy rock(Stooges, Motorhead, Clutch, etc)

Thanks.

That old Acoustic stuff is cool but if you don't love it then look to trade up. The Firebass is loud and bland. I'd love it if I needed volume, but it's not real toneful IMO and I don't think the Peavey 215 was designed with the Delta 15s in mind... Guessing it had Black Widows in there, originally, so it might not blow your mind. Then again it might... Who knows? I have nothing to say about the Carvin rig.

Thanks. I don't mind the "Vintage" stuff like the Acoustics but i like to change it my rig often. LIke my guitar gear, i probably won't stop until i find and amp i like too!
I have no way of trying any of these out right now so any info would be helpful.

Carvin

I have the Carvin 300. 300 watts @ 2ohm. I seem to always run it with a Peavey 1820 or a Peavey 2-15D BW. Sometimes both!
The Carvin has always been loud enough without ever going past the noon setting. Even outdoors. Never let me down after 3 years of once or twice a week outdoor shows lasting 2-4 hours each. It sounds kinds hi-fi, but some twiddling with the EQ fixed that.
I don't have a Nitrobass, but I do have a MarkVlll. 600watts @ 2ohm. A much boomier head to be sure and louder too.
Me? I'll take the Carvin, but wouldn't throw either one in the trash.

i am kinda leaning towards the Peavey right now. The speakers in the 2x15 cab are Delta 15a's. Any good?

Sorry if these are dumb questions, i am generally a guitar player and bass gear is kinda foreign to me right now. I know Acoustic stuff a little because i deal with a lot of "classic" amps (Sunn, Vox, etc).

Thanks

I had a Peavey Firebass 700 for years. Ran it through a Peavey 4x12 bass cab. I loved it! True, it was a little bland, but it had the power! To sweeten it up a little, I just ran an Art Tube Compressor in front of it.

Those things are built like a tank and Peavey has great support.

I don't have any personal dealings with Carvin, so I can't comment.

If you are leaning toward the Peavey gear, I would check out the specs on the cab.

Good luck.

Well the Carvin just got sold so my choice is either keep the Acoustic gear or swap for the Peavey gear.

Keep the acoustic, I've owned a few heads over the years and theyre built like tanks. The peaveys are also very reliable but I prefer the tone of the acoustics having tried a lot mark III, IV, etc heads...
