Peavey IPR 1600 Distortion

I picked up one of these for pretty cheap new, since my amp blew out the day before a large gig. I plugged it in during band practice and was really satisfied with the sound it was giving out.

I used it at the gig and it sounded great, another gig came and several practices, sounded awesome.

Then I took it home for practice use, noticed a large amount of distortion coming from softer notes. Playing harder seemed to lessen it, and turning up the volume also seemed to fix this.

This is my first power amp, so I don't know if this is normal or not. My first thought was the inherent distortion from the VT Bass Deluxe I was using as a preamp could've been the source. I went with my bass directly into the power amp and that seemed to lessen it, but it was still there.

Question is, is the power amp running at a low volume causing the distortion or something else?

Check to see if you got an iffy cable... just a WAG but a sketchy XLR cable can do a buzzy mid thing that still works but aint right.
