Peavey IPR-3000 experience/opinions?

Sign in to disble this ad
.
I know the IPR-3000 has been available fro a while now in the USA.

What do owners think of them as a bass amp?

I have a BBE B-Max pre-amp here that is crying out for a decent power-amp to feed.

I am currently building up a 2 x Kappalite 3012 cabinet that will handle 900W of input power and I'll be building another one up in the near future, or possibly buying a Barefaced unit to try. I want heaps of headroom, I'm sick of low-power rigs.

(Yes, I realise it sounds like overkill in the power department, but I'm so over struggling for volume at those louder, outdoor gigs.)

Opinions/experiences?

Cheers,
Greg

Hi Greg,

I'm using the IPR-3000 with Bergantino AE cabinets and preamps by Aguilar, Demeter and Mike Pope. My personal opinion? This is one great-sounding, powerful amp! I'm completely satisfied so far! And I think my Mike Pope / Peavey rack weighs less than 10 lbs -- including the rack!

BTW -- I play pretty loud!

Good luck!
Greg

Thanks Greg!

..... What, only one person on Talkbass got an IPR-3000?

Surely not!

I have a fearful and bought the peavey ipr to use with a preamp to power the cab. Used it once for a festival outdoor gig on a 90 degree day, it overheated 20 min into the set. Took it back and have yet to replace it.

That's a bit of a worry.

Mmmm, I guess he might be having trouble with his too.
Either that or he doesn't like it/me (LOL!) ?

I've been using an IPR-3000 for the past 4 months or so as my bass amp (teamed with a Kern IP-777 tube preamp), and 2 fEARful cabs.

I've been running it with one cab on each channel (8ohms per side, roughly 490w each), but also have a bridging cable good for ~3000w into 4ohms...I haven't needed it yet.

Lately I've used it 'up to volume' in rooms in the 80-90 degrees range for 3-5 hours at a time with no thermal shutdowns or suggestions of a problem. It does blow some warm air, but the ventilation on the unit seems pretty exemplary, the whole front of the amp is a vent.

Tomorrow I'll be doing a festival set in warm/sunny conditions, so I'll let y'all know what happens, but I don't anticipate any difference from the past shows where I've used it.

I bought this because I could double it for PA use, or split it for keyboard/bass amplification if needed, or in a pinch run monitors on stage on half while I ran my bass rig on the other side.

I did spend some time when I bought it to chase a chassis rattle, and I did install some foam at seams so it didn't make noise while I'm trying to make noise.

Went great. I'm on the road today, but briefly, I ran the IPR bridged into two fEARfuls. I had the attenuators set at noon and my bass volume at about 60%. conditions for our 1 hour set were 90 degrees plus direct afternoon sun. No problems at all and both the monitor engineer and the FOH engineer were WAY into the amp and cabs. I ran very loud, and the peavey sounded great.

I'm considering one of these now as well, surprised not many others have jumped on board... us old guys are still lugging around heavy racks.
I had a Shuttlemax 12.0 but its big enough to need a rack anyway so why not just use my Eden Navigator & one of these?

No one has a Peavey IPR in their racks? 8 lbs vs 38 lbs? Thats a HUGE difference.

I have two IPR1600s in the PA rack. The whole band, including when I run my bass through have never sounded better. I have played in 122 degrees outside with no troubles (check my location, it gets darn hot here).

Yes.

I'm not sure I know on any other bassists here using them currently besides me. Not many bassists really need 3Kw of power and I'd suggest that its probably more dangerous than good for 99% of them.

I'm not sure what I can tell you. It turns on every time I hit the power button. It creates loud sound through my speakers, and reproduces what my pre-amp gives it. It doesn't sound any different than any heavy power amp I've had.

Basically, it's a power amp. It has bright lights that blind the crowd. Its never overheated or shown any trouble.

I have an IPR1600 and a QSC PLX1602. The only difference is the weight (and the DIP switches on the PLX).

For a pre/power setup, the only differences between power amps are the output power, weight and features such as HP filters, easier bridging, etc. A power is a power amp is a...

Thanks all

Burningskies: The IPR 3000 is more like 900W at 4 ohms RMS vs 1500W peak, pretty much on par with my Streamliner 900. Glad you like it! My Eden Navigator is way too good to stop using because its too much, those days are now over with options like the IPR.

My rack

I just dont want to move it weekly and then set it back up... but this should change that.

Thanks guys on the reviews!
