Peavey Mark VI problem.

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey! I have a Peavey Mark VI with a matching 1810 Cab. When I'm playing the sound seems kind of muffled and is accompanied by a bit of a buzz/distortion sound. I'm pretty sure it's not my bass or cable as I don't have the issue when running it through my churches sound system. I play plugged into the High Gain input (passive bass) with pre-gain set about ten-eleven O'clock and the post gain between seven-ten O'clock. In other words, it's not that loud. I would appreciate any ideas as to what might be the cause of this and how to possibly fix it. Thanks!

Try running a quarter inch plug into all your jacks a few times, with contact cleaner if possible. Just a bit of oxidation can make a difference.

That is my first and easiest thought...

Do the amplifier ins too, they would have that contact "switch" to disconnect the preamp when using the amp section separately.

At least I think...

Could be a blown crossover, plug into the low jack and see if it cleans up.

May be easier than this..

I don't know your exact cabinet..

Do you have Scorpions in it?

May be easier than you believe to fix

Plug your bass amp into a monitor or some other speaker box..

We'll start with deciding if it's the cabinet (my guess) or the amp.

IF it's the cab, it's easy to tackle.. have seen this before.

+1 on the cab. Isolate the problems. There's too much that could be going wrong with the amp and cab in question. Not to mention swapping cables too...

Yeah, it has to 10" scorps and an 18 BW. I cleaned them out not too long ago. I'll try the amp through another cab though.

one other thing, the problem isn't consistent. Sometimes it's very perfect, other times (like when I played this afternoon) it cuts in and out, and then it will be a strong prominent distortion in the mix. Also, it volume of the buzz is consistent. It seems like I can drown it out if I turn up the volume. Needless to say, due to the inconsistency of the issue, it may take a while to diagnose it :/

Try taking a single instrument cable and jack your fx loop send into the return straight up, and play your bass through your amp through the input you normally use. If the problem goes away you, you need to clean the fx loop jacks. Your description of your troubles reminds of the dirty fx loop problem that is often is never considered, as a lot of players don't run effects to begin with. I've run into it maybe twice in all my years, and it was a savvy amp tech at Deitze Music in Lincoln Nebraska, that educated me on this little known problem that can happen every so often with some amps.

I ain't saying it's your problem, but at least you can eliminate it from a list of possible troubles that might be affecting your amp. If that ain't the problem I'd start looking at solder connections in the amp head.

If the effects loop, and speaker remedies others have mentioned don't resolve the issue then re-flowing the solder on the treble pot's (legs?) might.

No. I don't have a lot of time on my hands for dealing with this... Plus, as I mentioned, the problem isn't consistent. Lastly, I don't have an additional speaker to test at the moment. So, I will let you guys know when I get the chance to run tests effectively.
