Peavey MaxBass pre

I picked up a nice and clean used Peavey MaxBass pre-amp. It's a nice unit. There were some discussions of a popular mod to it, but I can't find anything in the archives.

Also, what are some replacement tubes to consider? It sounds a bit dead compared to my ss pre, so I was considering replacing its tube.
