Peavey Power Amps

I've been considering the Peavey IPR 3000. I also see they have an older model, the CS 3000. Aside from price and weight, what should I be comparing with these two?

The best amp deal going now is the Peavey IPR with DSP

The DSP includes features that would cost you hundreds and hundreds if bought separately. For example many of the Waves Maxx product line are included. Peavey is the only amp company to offer this.

Crest (Peavey's Lexus) also has a great DSP with Waves Maxx

Haven't thought much about DSP. I plan to use this as part of a bi-amp rig for the 15" drivers. The mid-range drivers will be powered by a tube power amp.

Hand up, who's seen an IPR/DSP amp in the wild yet?

I use a Yamaha P3500S amp. It has "YS" Yamaha Sound Processing which I guess is their form of DSP, Dont know if it is true DSP or not but the extra hundred$ and the weight of this amp was is worth it for me for the past 3 years. If you need a very clean powerful "mastered" type of sound this will work. It does seem to scoop a lot of the frequencies that create gritty sound out, so if you like that jaguar type of tube tone this wont be worth it. I play reggae, acid Jazz, techno sounds through it and its great. I've compared it against crowns and QSC and they dont compare to the extra bottom and cleanliness you get when you turn on the YS on yamahas amps. That being said, I wouldn't mind an amp that weighs a bit less. If anyone has compared this amp to something with DSP let me know too.

Careful with this DSP business. Make sure the exact things you plan on doing are supported by that amp's particular DSP feature set.

But, back to the question. Consider whether field repairability is important to you. If it is, then the IPR may not be what you're looking for.

The track record of the CS series' legacy design is impressive, especially in rough-service conditions. The IPR really hasn't established a track record yet. This may or may not be important to you.

Consider also resale value.

Here's a quick look at the insides of my Peavey IPR-3000.

Resale wise, I'm not so concerned. It was $400 for a stereo amp that bridges for 3kw of power.

I can almost guarantee the CS is a better amp for continuous power.

But, for a bass rig, I'll take the IPR. I have 3 actually, 2 x 1600's and a 3K and love them.
