Peavey Pro 410 vs Ampeg SVT-410HLF? Opinions?

Sign in to disble this ad
I received my SVT 2 Pro amp today. Now I'm looking for a cab to go with it.

The best-sounding (to me) rig I personally have ever played through was an SVT Classic with an SVT-410HLF. Getting this SVT 2 Pro (while not *identical* to the Classic, I know) is my first step in getting that sound.

Looking at cabs locally, I found a Peavey Pro 410 cab. Specs-wise, it looks very comparable to the SVT-410HLF. I am about to go have a listen, but I won't be able to A/B it with the Ampeg.

So, do any of you guys have any experience with the Pro 410 and the SVT? Can you tell me how they compare sound-wise? When I tried the SVT before, what I loved was the huge, fat, bottom end on it.

TIA!

ps. I did search on here for info on the Pro 410 and read through 12 pages of threads that came up in the search results. But, I couldn't find any direct comparisons of the Pro 410 with the SVT-410HLF. Mostly, it was just people saying how the Pro 410 is so much better than some other Peavey 410 cabs.

pps. The one I found is 4 ohm, with a Speak-on connector, so it should be perfect to use with my SVT or as an extension cab on my BAM210 combo.

Well, I guess I don't have much in the way of objective thoughts to share. But, I took my new (to me) SVT and my Cirrus 5 down to GC yesterday and played around with it running through an SVT-410HLF, then I took it over to the place where I bought the Cirrus and tried it with the Peavey Pro 410. The Pro 410 sounded as good to me, and they made me very good deal on it, so I brought it home.

It's hard to say without having them side by side, but the Peavey seemed to sound just as good as the Ampeg cab to me. I have a friend with an Aguilar GS410. I'm going to try and take the Peavey over to his place this week and A/B the two cabs running out of his SVT II (non pro) and see how they compare.

Too late, I guess, but just for the matching tie and hankerchief, I'd get the companion Ampeg cab. But, if you're happy, that's really all that matters.

Yeah, I definitely have some of that feeling. I like stuff that matches. :-)

But, that's why I didn't feel too bad about going ahead and getting the Peavey cab. It matches perfectly as an extension cab to my Peavey BAM210. :-)

Congrats on the new rig - I played out my 2Pro earlier today and got to open it up a good bit. AWESOME tone. FWIW, I strongly prefer the Peavey cab to the 410 HLF - it certainly seems more balanced to me than the Ampeg, so I say just go for it. No worries about not matching the head and cab - mine don't match, but my ears thank me for it!

Before I turned to G-B about 5 yrs ago, I owned a Peavey Classic 400 and a Peavey Pro 410 cab. This was a killer setup. The Pro 410 could handle everything the amp could throw at it. I know that Peavey specifically designed the Pro 410 cabinet to compete with the Eden's of the industry that were more expensive but shared the exact same specs.

Bottom line here, you'll be happy with the Pro 410.

PS - I've never been an Ampeg guy, so I can't comment on the 410hlf you also considered.
