Peavey TNT 115s question

Sign in to disble this ad
So I was at band practice tonight, and playing on my guitarist's Peavey combo. I leave my Ampeg at home when we jam over there because it's super heavy and there's no room in his practice space for it. Anyway, I seriously don't like the tone of his TNT, it's very muddy and weak on the mids. I know it's a 115 so that's what they do, but my Ampeg 115 has way more definition and punch.

So my question is, have any of you got any tips on how to work these Peaveys to make them more defined in the mix? Or perhaps, if I can't get the amp to sound how I want, does anyone have more creative ways to maybe finagle my amp a spot in his practice space? Thanks TBers!

By the way, we play country and rock and I use a MIM Jazz 4 string, if that helps.

Different speaker options made for very different sounding TNT amps:
-Scorpion;
-Sheffield;
-Black Widow (BW Equipped).

I would think the Black Widow speaker would sound the best ... I have and old Combo 300 and it's loaded with a BW and the tone is O.K. ... IMHO

I owned a Peavey TNT 115 many years ago, and it was a great-sounding piece of gear for a small, inexpensive combo amp. A little boxy-sounding maybe, but the lows were good - and the mids were very good and very punchy for a 1x15. Try bumping up your low mids on the onboard EQ...

Dude, how are we supposed to recommend a solution when we can't even see the room?

Not necessarily. There are muddy 10s and bright 15s.

Sure - play with the EQ. Start by disengaging the punch and contour switches, if you have them. Try boosting between 600 and 2000hz; first separately, then in combination. You should be able to find a tone good enough for practice.

Yup, plus Eminence. Definitely different tones, and weights. But since it's not the OP's amp, I assume speaker replacement is not an option.

TECH21's VT or BDDI will do the trick quite nicely! I've even gotten good results with one of these BellRingers! It takes the muddiness out of the amp.
